St. John's finished up a 26-13 season with a win over Mount St. Joseph in the Alhambra consolation round.
Overall, Cadets coach Patrick Behan said he was pleased with the season, which included a trip to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title game.
“ In Year 2 a lot of progress was made, not just in the win-loss column, but just what we wanted to do with our kids," he said. "It was a fun group to coach and I just enjoyed everyday, even if we had a tough loss, we always came back. Just like today - we lost yesterday to DeMatha and we came and played the 3 o’clock game with energy. I’m really proud of them, I think they did a lot of really good things this year, and I’m really proud of our three seniors.”
Of those seniors, the Cadets' biggest loss is Virginia-bound guard Casey Morsell, who earned WCAC Co-Player Of The Year honors. SJC will also lose wing Jalin Abbott (St. Thomas Aquinas) and guard Devon Dunn.
“I think we were a pretty deep team this year - losing Casey’s going to be a huge loss on both ends, and Devon and Jalin as well, but we did start four junior," Behan said. "And we played a couple of young guys and we’ve got a really good incoming recruiting class, so I think the future is very, very bright.”
2020 guards Darius Maddox, John "Manzie" Williams, Ishmael Leggett and forward Mikey Square headline the returning Cadets, alongside 2021 forward Victory Naboya and highly-touted 2022 guard Shane Lancaster.
“This offseason, it's just strictly hard work," Ishmael Leggett said. "We’re losing big pieces, so big players need to fill in for those big pieces. I think the returning guys are in a great position to fill those big pieces in, for sure.”
