Marcus Dockery will finish his high school career outside the DMV. The 2020 University of Maryland confirmed that he’ll be transferring from Bishop O’Connell (Va.) to Brewster Academy in New Hampshire after receiving his acceptance earlier in the evening.

“I’m hoping to get a lot out of it,” Dockery said in a conversation shortly before announcing his move on Instagram. “Mainly to spread my horizons with different people and academically. I’ll get to go to school with people from different countries and learn different things from them, and play basketball - the game that I love - all the time. Every day when I wake up the first thing that I do is play basketball. I want to take my game to the next level and be prepared to play at the University of Maryland - not just come into Maryland and sit; I I want to come into Maryland and produce.”

The 6-foot-3, 170-pound Dockery averaged a team-high 16 points per game for O’Connell last season. He said one of the biggest things he wants to focus on at Brewster is improving his strength.

“Lifting and getting my body right is most important, because Maryland, they want me to put on 15 pounds. What better place to do that than where I can lift anytime I need? I have full access to the weight room and they have top trainers who can help me every day and make sure I put on the correct 15 pounds the correct way.”

Dockery said he also considered IMG and Oak Hill Academy, but felt Brewster gave him the best chance to get away and focus for his final season.

“It’ll help me lock in,” he said. “No distractions; every day I’m doing things to get me better towards my goal.”

Dockery's departure is the second big blow for the Knights, who lost 2021 guard Brayon Freeman to Huntington Prep (WV) just last week.
