2019 MVP: MILTON MATTHEWS III, ROCK CREEK CHRISTIAN (MD) 2020 GUARD

Matthews was absolutely scorching offensively on Saturday, shooting 80 percent (16-of-21) from the field - including 8-of-11 from 3-point range - while putting up an event-high 13.3 points per game.

In a camp format, it can sometimes be difficult for players to feel comfortable initially while playing with unfamiliar teammates, but Matthews was locked in from the very beginning.

“I think the main key in that was just to stay confident,” he said, “and just know that you’re supposed to be here, and basically not really paying attention to the next guy. There was a lot of other big names in the camp, but I wasn’t really focused on who was the best player or who was playing the next game; I just focused on playing my best game and doing what I had to do.”

The day continued a strong summer for the 6-foot-3, 185-pound Matthews, who has seen his recruitment take off with scholarship offers from St. Bonaventure, East Tennessee State and Quinnipiac since June.

“I feel as though my recruitment is going very well,” he said. “I think it’s all going a great pace right now - I’m not really rushing into anything. I’m just trying to focus on my work and make sure that’s straight and then eventually I’ll decide where I’m going to go after the season.”

Overall, Matthews - who posted a day-best 19 points in a 64-63 win over Team White - made the most of his DMVelite 80 debut.

“The talent was amazing,” he said. “I don’t think it could have gotten any better than that; they were real unselfish and everybody made the extra pass and took the best shot and was on the same page, so I felt great about my team.”

Heading into his senior year at Rock Creek, Matthews will look to help the Eagles repeat at Capital Beltway Athletic Association champions.

“This year I really want to improve my defensive game,” he said. “I think it’s gotten a lot better than before, but with me knowing that I can never learn too much about the game, I just feel as though I can be a lot better than what I am. Just remaining humble has everything to do with it; just knowing that you can learn a lot more than what you know now.”
