2019 Governor's Challenge: Day 1 Scores

Recaps from the opening day of action at the 2019 Governor’s Challenge:

WICOMICO YOUTH & CIVIC CENTER

DELMAR (DE) 62, MARDELA (MD) 57
2020 guard TJ Gibson had 18 points and 2021 guard Cameron Bozman had 13 to lead the Wildcats.

2021 forward Sean Diamond had 15 for the Indians, who also got 22 points apiece from2021 guard 2021 guard Patrick Louis-Jacque and Jordan Layfield, as well as 10 points and 14 rebounds from 2021 forward Zach Mills.

LAUREL (DE) 92, WASHINGTON (MD) 67
2023 forward Dontarius Jones had a game-high 22 points to lead five players in double figures for the Bulldogs.

2022 guard Javier White had 16 for Laurel and 2023 guard Kylse Wilson 13, while 2023 center Corey Mumford and 2022 center Nifere Griffin finished with 10 apiece.

2021 guard Alden Horsey and 2021 forward Davin Phillips both scored 21 for the Jaguars - Phillips added 10 boards - who also got 11 from 2021 forward Charles Smith III and 10 points from 2021 guard Darius Dennis.

JM BENNETT (MD) 62, POLYTECH (DE) 51
2020 guard Jordan Williams had 17 points, 2020 forward Parker Towey 16 and 2021 guard Corey Smith 11 to lead the Clippers, who outscored the Panthers 35-14 in the second half to break open a close game.

2020 forward Christian Cote had a game-high 18 points for Polytech.

QUEEN ANNE’S (MD) 51, RON BROWN (DC) 44
2020 guard Hugh Meehan and 2020 forward Jordan Dozier had 16 points apiece to lead the Lions, who outscored the Monarchs 15-6 in the fourth quarter to earn the victory.

2021 guard Dajuan Miller had 19 points to lead Ron Brown.

GEORGETOWN DAY (DC) 68, STEPHEN DECATUR (MD) 49
2022 forward Brock Davis tallied 20 points, 11 rebounds and 7 steals while 2020 forward Montez McNeil also had 20 points to lead the Hoppers.

2021 forward Jeremy Margolis had 12 points for Georgetown Day.

2020 guard Theo Hobbs had 12, 2020 forward DeCameron McAfee 11 and 2020 forward Drew Haueisen 10 for the Seahawks.

ST. JOHN’S CATHOLIC PREP (MD) 58, HUNTINGTOWN (MD) 52
2020 guard Tyriel Collins had a game-high 22 points for the Vikings, while 2020 guard Brandon Pilgrim had 17 and 2022 guard Masai Troutman 11.

2020 guard Charles Contee had 16 points to lead the Hurricanes.

CARAVEL (DE) 71, ST. PAUL’S (MD) 40
2020 guard Kevin Keister had 16 points to lead four players in double figures as the Buccaneers built an early lead and never looked back.

2020 center Jeb Williams had 13 points, 2021 guard DeAndre Gourdine 12 and 2020 forward Justin Owens 10 for Caravel, which led 22-0 after the first quarter and 40-17 at the half.

2021 guard Anthony Smaldore and 2021 forward Luke Trotta had 15 points apiece for the Crusaders.

LINGANORE (MD) 69, OSBOURN PARK (VA) 61
2020 guard Sean Lang had 19 points and 2021 guard Francisco Palacios 18 to lead the Lancers to victory.

2020 guard Chase Maddox and 2020 forward Kendall Johson had 10 points apiece for Linganore, which used a balanced scoring effort to counter a big day from Osbourn Park 2020 guard Ethan Wilson.

Wilson - who nearly set a Governor’s Challenge scoring record last year in a bracket title victory - finished with a day-best 38 points. 2022 guard Dominic Shoemaker added 10 for the Yellow Jackets.

POTOMAC (VA) 63, OAKDALE (MD) 58
2021 wing Tyrell Harris had 19 points to lead the Panthers, who held off a furious Oakdale rally to get the win.

Potomac led by as many as 23 points in the first half, but Oakdale stormed back to but the deficit to just two points in the fourth quarter before falling short.

Harris was joined in double-figure scoring by 2022 guard Kyle Honore (14), 2021 forward Rakhim LaMarre (11) and 2020 guard Manny White (10).

2020 guard Jack McGaha had 18 points for the Bears, while 2020 guard Tommy Kelly finished with 15.

CALVERT (MD) 46, WALKERSVILLE (MD) 43
2020 center Johathan Rawlings hit a pair of free throws with 3.9 seconds remaining to seal the victory for Calvert, which outscored Walkersville 12-5 in the fourth quarter.

2021 guard Mark Rachic had 15 points to lead Calvert, while 2021 guard Nyson Andre added 10.

2020 guard Chaz Egan and 2022 forward Jeremiah Franklin had 10 points apiece for the Lions.

DOVER (DE) 66, WICOMICO (MD) 50
2020 guard Elijah Allen and 2020 guard Wanya Wise had 16 points apiece to lead the Senators to victory in one of the day’s most highly-anticipated matchups.

2020 forward Jy’Heim Spencer had 14 points, 12 rebounds and 9 blocks for Dover, which jumped out to an early lead and never trailed.

2021 forward Jayson Handy had 19 points to lead the host Indians.

LINDEN (NJ) 56, BOWIE (MD) 52
2020 guard Nashawn Holmes had a game-high 20 points to lead the Tigers, who pulled away late to pick up the victory.

2021 guard Colin Cowan added 12 points for Linden, while 2020 forward Amir Williams finished with 10.

2020 guard Taimon Jones scored 13 points for the Bulldogs, who for 11 from 2020 guard Muhammad Abdulmateen

MONSIGNOR BONNER-PRENDIE (PA) 81, OLYMPIC (NC) 71
2020 Tyreese Watson had 20 points to lead five players in double-figures as the Friars closed out Day 1 with a victory.

2021 Malik Edwards (15), 2020 Connor Eagan (13), 2020 Donovan Rodriguez (13) and 2020 Oscar Uduma (12) rounded out the double-figure scoring for the Friars.

2020 wing Josh Banks had 28 points to lead the Trojans, who also got 18 from 2021 guard Isaiah Golden and 15 from 2021 guard Trevon Williams

SETON HALL (NJ) 57, NEW HOPE (MD) 45
2020 guard Zander Zebrowski had 18 points and 2020 guard Mason Morral 14 to lead the Pirates over the Tigers.

2022 wing Hasson Massenburg scored 16 points to lead New Hope, which rallied back from a big early deficit but couldn't effectively close the gap.

UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND-EASTERN SHORE

SALISBURY SCHOOL (MD) 53, KINGS CHRISTIAN (MD) 39
2020 forward Jared Vasquez posted 18 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Dragons in the opening game of the day at UMES.

2020 forward Jozfef Baraz added 11 points for Salisbury School.

2021 guard Maasai Brown had 12 points for the Eagles, while 2020 forward Cedric Sobola finished with 10.

FREDERICK FORCE (MD) 66, WORCESTER PREP (MD) 51
2021 guard AJ Switzer had 30 points to lead the Force to a comfortable opening win in their Governor’s Challenge debut.

2022 guard Nathan Bowes added 11 points and 2023 guard James Bowes 10.

2021 guard Mason Brown had 18 points to lead the Mallards, while 2022  forward Michael Wehberg had 11.

CONRAD SCHOOL OF SCIENCE (DE) 44, GRACE BRETHREN (MD) 43
2021 guard Che Jackson and 2020 forward Jamar Wright had 13 points apiece to lead the Redwolves to a narrow victory.

2021 guard Rayvon Wilkinson had 11 points to lead Grace Brethren.

PIEDMONT CLASSICAL (NC) 64, COLEGIO SAN FELIPE DE ARCEBIO (PR) 55
2020 guard Jalen Joiner had 15 points to lead the Bobcats to victory in their first Governor’s Challenge appearance.

2021 guard Jamarri Thomas had 12 points for Piedmont Classical, while 2022 forward Amare Miller added 10.

2020 forward Adrian Medina had 16 points and 2020 guard Lowy Ruiz 14 for the Eagles, who are also making their inaugural Governor’s Challenge trip.
