BOWIE, MD - The inaugural DMVelite Super Circuit came to a close this past weekend with the crowing of champions for the 17U, 16U and 15U Divisions.
Here’s a look at some of the top 17U performers from Session IV:
JAYDEN HOLLAND, SOUTHERN MARYLAND ALL-STARS
Holland stepped his game up in the playoffs, increasing his scoring average from 7.8 in the first three Super Circuit sessions to 13.2 points per game, and his rebounding average from 4.3 to 5.2. He played the final two games with a chipped tooth and split lip suffered against Team Silk, but never backed down, finishing that game with a team-high 14 points.
The 6-foot-4, 182-pound wing from Huntingtown (Md.) took full advantage of the opportunity to compete.
“It’s been real good,” he said, “because last year we were stuck in the house not doing nothing, so being able to come out here and play, it's a blessing, really.”
DEVON CARTER, SOUTHERN MARYLAND ALL-STARS
Carter (St. Charles 2022) came up big in the 78-72 championship win over Alexandria Kings, scoring a team-high 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range. He averaged 8.5 points and 2.3 assists per game for the weekend.
JEVON SIMMONS, SOUTHERN MARYLAND ALL-STARS
A 6-foot-3 2022 wing from Westlake (Md.), Simmons had a very productive Session IV, averaging 10 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game, leading the team in the latter two categories.
JORDAN NKOA ABESOLLO, NOVA UNFD
Abesollo had one of the most eye-popping performances of the circuit on Friday night, posting 25 points, 15 rebounds and 9 blocks in an opening 70-49 loss to Runnin Mavs. To make matters more impressive, he did it with his short-handed squad playing with just four players the entire game.
“It was very tough with four, but you’ve just got to keep playing,” he said. “If we had five I know we would have blown them out, for sure.”
A 6-foot-5, 182 pounder from St. Maria Goretti (Md.), Abesollo has seen his recruitment pick up this summer, with scholarship offers from Fairfield, Fordham and Wagner to go with a previous one from Mount St. Mary’s. He said he’s planning to take some visits in August and isn’t sure if he’ll make a decision before or after his senior season.
Whichever school gets him, they’ll be adding an athlete with a motor that never stops. He averaged 18 points, 15 rebounds and 5 blocks per game for the weekend.
“[My strengths are] Rebounding, running the floor and playing hard,” he said. “Just help the team win.”
AUSTIN BAILEY, NOVA UNFD
The Fairfax Christian (Va.) 2022 guard led NOVA UNFD in scoring while taking on the bulk of the ball handling duties. He put up a team-high 18.5 points per game for the weekend, including 20 before fouling out late in an elimination round loss to Team Silk.
MICHAEL MONTANO, ALEXANDRIA KINGS
The Edison (Va.) 2022 guard continued his strong play on the Super Circuit, putting up 18.2 points, 9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and nearly 2 steals per game while guiding the Kings to the 17U title game. He was practically unguardable in the final, putting up 33 points to keep the Kings within striking distance most of the way before Southern Maryland All-Stars pulled away in the last few minutes.
NADER CHIRCHI, ALEXANDRIA KINGS
The 6-foot-6, 245-pound 2023 center posted 11.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game while giving the Kings a strong interior presence. He had 21 points and 9 rebounds in a 68-53 win over NOVA 94 Feet.
Chirchi is a three-sport varsity athlete at Edison (Va.), serving as the left tackle on the football team - “That’s what people are most surprised at, that I’m a lineman,” he said - and competing in track as a thrower. He moves his feet well and seemed to grow more confident and assertive on the offensive end in each session of the Super Circuit.
“It’s a really fun experience and it’s really enjoyable for me,” Chirchi said of the Super Circuit. “If I didn’t have this, I’d probably just be in the weightroom lifting and just getting ready, but I actually have something to do.”
TERRELL NEAL, ALEXANDRIA KINGS
The 6-foot-3 West Potomac (Va.) 2022 wing did a nice job of making teams pay for focusing their perimeter attention on Montano, posting 11.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and a team-high 3 assists per game. His play was especially critical in a 67-63 semifinal win over VA Elite MD, as he put up 17 points, 10 rebounds and three assists to help the Kings stave off the upset.
AARON BOYD, ALEXANDRIA KINGS
Boyd (Edison 2022) showed good athleticism and finishing ability in the Kings’ 78-72 title game loss, posting 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting.
DORIAN JONES, RUNNIN MAVS
The 6-foot-2 Jones led the Mavericks in both scoring (13.3) and rebounds (7.7) per game, showing his ability to contribute and utilize his athleticism in a variety of ways.
AUNDRE PERKINS, RUNNIN MAVS
The Concordia Prep (Md.) 2023 guard was in attack mode in wins over NOVA UNFD and DMV Stags, posting 17 points in each game to help the Mavs earn a bye into the semifinals. He averaged 11.7 points per game on 50 percent shooting from the field for the weekend.
JOSHUA CHAMBERS, RUNNIN MAVS
Chambers (Indian Creek 2022) did a little bit of everything for the Runnin Mavs, leading the 17U Division in assists per game (4.7) and his team in steals (2.7) while also pulling down 7.3 rebounds per game - especially impressive for a 5-foot-10 guard. He stuffed the stat sheet in an opening win over NOVA UNFD, posting 10 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds and 4 steals.
LIZANDRY NUNEZ, TEAM SILK
Nunez established himself as Team Silk’s most explosive scorer during the first three sessions of the Super Circuit, but showed how much he could contribute in other ways at Session IV. He averaged 9.2 points and led the team in rebounds (6.2), assists (3.2) and steals (2) per game as Silk reached the semifinal round.
STEPHON MARCANO, TEAM SILK
Marcano’s versatility and ball handling were key for Silk, and he was noticeable missed after being forced out early with an elbow injury in their 71-53 semifinal loss to eventual champion Southern Maryland All-Stars. The New Town (Md.) guard averaged 11 points per game for the weekend.
BRANDON MORGAN, TEAM SILK
The 6-foot-5 forward showed impressive touch from long range, going 11-of-21 from 3-point range while averaging a team-high 12 points per game.
IBRAHIM ABDULMATEEN-ROBINSON, VA ELITE MD
Abdulmateen-Robinson averaged 14.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game to lead his squad on a run to the semifinals. The Bowie (Md.) 2022 forward has good size at 6-4 and the ability to step out to the perimeter on occasion.
RICO WARRICK, METRO ALL-STARS
The Northwestern-PG (Md.) 2022 guard posted 19.5 points per game for the weekend, and went for 25 as Metro pushed VA Elite MD before falling short in the quarterfinals, 69-63. He had 14, 6 rebounds and 4 steals in an opening 46-42 win over DMV Stags.
JUSTIN INGRAM, METRO ALL-STARS
Ingram is an intriguing prospect with good size (6-4) and versatility on the wing. He was one of Metro’s most consistent performers throughout the circuit, and averaged 13 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in Session IV.
PJ MOISE, GERMANTOWN BASKETBALL CLUB
The 6-foot-1 Moise (Seneca Valley 2022) opened with 16 points in a loss to Alexandria Kings, and was Germantown’s top scoring threat overall while averaging 13.5 points per game.
EVAN COOKE, GERMANTOWN BASKETBALL CLUB
Cooke was highly productive in his two outings for GBC, averaging 10 points and 11.5 rebounds per game while shooting 60 percent from the field. The 6-foot-5 2022 center from Seneca Valley (Md.) showed good hands and touch in the paint.
NICO MCCLURE, MARYLAND DFENDERS
McClure (Georgetown Day 2022) posted 15 points in the Dfenders’ opening 57-52 win over NOVA 94 Feet, and averaged a team-high 13 per game for the weekend. He established himself as the Dfenders’ most consistent scoring threat throughout the circuit.
DUNCAN MILLER, NOVA 94 FEET
A 6-foot-1 2022 guard from Meridian (formerly George Mason) High, Miller was Nova 94’s most consistent offensive threat, averaging 16.5 points per game in a pair of contests.
ANTWAN SMALLWOOD, ALLENTOWN PRESSURE
An unsigned 2021 guard from Friendly (Md.), Smallwood averaged a team-high 15.3 points per game, highlighted by 25 in a near-upset of Team Silk on Sunday.
JASON BOYD, DMV STAGS
Boyd (Clarksburg 2023) had a game-high 15 points and grabbed 8 rebounds as the Stags fell just short in their opener last Friday, losing to Metro All-Stars 46-42.
