2021 MVP: JEANNOT BASIMA, JOHN CARROLL (MD) 2023 GUARD

In a showcase camp environment, it can sometimes be hard to develop a rapport with players you aren’t familiar with.

John Carroll (Md.) 2023 guard Jeannot Basima had no such issues, earning 2021 DMVelite 80 Most Valuable Player honors with an impressive all-around performance.

The 6-foot-4, 180-pounder was the event’s second leading scorer at 11.3 points per game while finishing first in assists (3.7), second in steals (2.0) and third in rebounds (4.7) while guiding his team to a perfect 3-0 record.

“My team, we had good chemistry,” Basima said, “so even when we didn’t have any games, we were just trying to hang out and trying to get to know each other and stuff. Pretty much I would say that helped me a lot with my performance there, because my teammates were just kind of close and we were all trying to get to know each other.”

Basima showed the ability to get to the basket whenever he wanted on Sunday, with a quick first step and the kind of strength to knock defenders off-balance. He didn’t need the ball in his hands to make an impact, though, and was willing to contribute in multiple ways.

A native of Goma, in the Democratic Republic Of The Congo, Basima came to the United States as an 8th Grader and attended New York Military Academy before moving on to John Carroll for high school. He broke out last season, and was absolutely dominant in the Baltimore Catholic League Championship game in March, scoring 29 points and making a pair of free throws with 5.7 seconds remaining in overtime to lift his sixth-seeded squad to a 66-62 upset victory over top-seed and three-time defending champ St. Frances (Md.).

As the Patriots gear up for a title defense, Basima said that the team’s hunger remains.

“Right now being in that position, you’ve got respect, but we have to make sure they know that we want to still be champs,” he said. “So this year, we know that everybody is going to come and try to step on our neck, but we’re not going to let that happen because we’ve been working to try to defend the championship.”

Basima currently holds scholarship offers from Howard and Siena, but said he’s also heard from Davidson, Temple and several Ivy League schools, including Columbia, Penn and Yale.
