Paul VI 2023 guard Deshawn Harris-Smith headlines our list of Northern Virginia's best.

We are pleased to close our 2022-23 all-area teams by announcing our DMVelite All-State selections for Northern Virginia.

Our staff would like to thank the players, coaches and fans who made this past season – our 13th year of high school coverage – a success, and we look forward to many more. This team encompasses our Northern Virginia coverage area, which includes players at public and private high schools located in Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William Counties.

And now, here’s our selection of the state’s best of the best – the 2023 DMVelite All-Northern Virginia Team:

2022 DMVELITE ALL-NOVA AWARDS

DMVelite Northern Va Player of The Year: DeShawn Harris-Smith Paul VI 2023 Guard
Coach of The Year: Carlos Poindexter, Hayfield
Freshman of The Year: Quincy Wadley, Bishop O’Connell Guard
Most Improved: CJ Johnson, Episcopal 2023 Guard
Under The Radar: Matthew Shelton, Evergreen Christian 2024 Wing
Unsung Hero: Darrel Johnson, Highland 2023 Forward

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: DESHAWN HARRIS-SMITH, PAUL VI 2022 GUARD

The Maryland-bound Harris-Smith fully embraced his role as senior star on a loaded PVI squad, posting 17.8 points, 7.4 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 2.6 steals per game while being named the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Player Of The Year.

COACH OF THE YEAR: CARLOS POINDEXTER, HAYFIELD

For the second year in a row Poindexter takes home our COY honor, and it’s hard to dispute. Coming off an unbeaten state championship season in 2021-22, Poindexter expertly navigated the path of lofty expectations, guiding the Hawks to a 30-1 record and a Class 6 title repeat.

FIRST TEAM

JOSEPH BALDWIN, FAIRFAX CHRISTIAN 2023 WING

The Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) Division III Player of the Year averaged 14 points and 7 rebounds per game for the Cardinals as they captured the VISAA D3 State Championship. He’s headed to play his college ball at NCAA Division III Shenandoah (Va.).

MARGAD CHOIJILSUREN, FAIRFAX 2023 GUARD

The Randolph-Macon (Va.) commit turned in another stat-stuffing campaign for the Lions, posting 17.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.5 steals per game.

CAMERON COLE, HIGHLAND SCHOOL 2023 GUARD

After Highland lost three future Division I players to transfer, Cole picked up the torch and led the Hawks to the VISAA Division II Championship and the Metro Private Schools Conference regular-season crown. The Navy commit was named MPSC Player of The Year after posting 16.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.4 steals per game.

GIBRALTAR COLEMAN, FLINT HILL 2023 FORWARD

The American University-bound Coleman was a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses with his blend of size, strength and shooting ability, averaging 22.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game for the Huskies.

NASIR COLEMAN, PATRIOT 2023 GUARD

The Pioneers’ floor general posted 10.7 points, 5.4 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2 steals per game to lead the program to its first state championship appearance. Coleman is headed to Division II University of the District of Columbia.

DARREN HARRIS, PAUL VI 2024 GUARD

The Duke commit continued to light defenses up from the perimeter, averaging 14 points per game while shooting 41 percent from 3-point range. Harris’ overall floor game improved as well, and he has the tools to potentially become the third straight Panther to take home WCAC POY honors next year after Dug McDaniel and Harris-Smith.

DJ HOLLOWAY, HAYFIELD 2023 GUARD

The Division II Belmont-Abbey (NC) commit capped his stellar high school career in style, earning Virginia Class 6 Player Of The Year honors after averaging 13 points, 2.8 steals and 2.4 assists per game while helping the Hawks to a second straight state championship.

DAVID KING, HAYFIELD 2023 FORWARD

Perhaps no player was more instrumental in their team’s success than King, an undersized - he was listed at 6-foot-2 - post player who consistently outperformed bigger opponents. The Division III Marymount (Va.) commit posted 14.4 points and 6 rebounds to help the Hawks capture their second straight Class 6 state title.

TAVARRES RILEY, FREEDOM-WOODBRIDGE 2024 GUARD

Defenders simply couldn’t slow the Eagles’ scoring machine, as Riley poured in 29.1 points per game en route to Region Player of The Year honors. Riley - who has scored over 1,000 points in just two seasons at Freedom - went for a school record 51 in a Cardinal District Tournament semifinal loss to Potomac in February.

JORDAN SCOTT, SOUTH LAKES 2025 WING

Scott broke out as one of the area’s top prospects while averaging 19 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2 steals per game while leading the Seahawks to their second straight Concorde District and Northern Region titles.
