LAUREL, MD - The 2024 Maryland Private Schools State Basketball Tournament tipped off on Wednesday with a trio of boys games at St. Vincent Pallotti High School.

In the end, Lanham Christian, Severn and Riverdale Baptist advanced to Saturday’s second round, which will also take place at Pallotti.

#13 LANHAM CHRISTIAN 63, #12 SANDY SPRING 53

2026 guard Diego Joy poured in a game-high 26 points to lead the Lions to an opening victory,

“My teammates were finding me, my jump shot was on and we were executing our plays,” Joy said, “so we’re a pretty hard team to stop when we do that.

Jamar Payne had 14 for Lanham Christian, which advanced to face No. 5 seed and defending tournament champion Mt. Zion Prep on Saturday.

“It was no question, [the key was] defense,” Joy said. “Running back, being on the helpside and identifying their one shooter and just staying in the gaps.”

Sandy Spring was without its top player in Potomac Valley Athletic Conference Player of the Year Jake Tringone, who sat out with an injury sustained in practice on Tuesday.

Donovan Blackman had 22 and Darrion Sardo 19 to lead the Wildebeests.

#10 SEVERN 76, #15 TAKOMA ACADEMY 41

In a matchup of first-time tourney participants, the Admirals took control early and cruised to victory.

2026 guard Sean Harvey had career-high 22 points while going 4-of-7 from 3-point range and grabbing 9 rebounds.

“My teammates were finding me, and my shot felt good,” Harvey said.

Severn jumped out quickly, and led 24-15 lead after one quarter and 42-24 at the half.

“We wanted to come out hot,” Harvey said. “We usually come out slow, so this was a good game for us. Defense was the key.”

Kingston Price had 19 points and Jacob Randall 17 points and 6 rebounds for Severn.

Micah Samuels led Takoma with 10 points.

Next up for Severn - which won the MIAA-B Conference title to clinch this year’s bid - is a showdown with No. 7 St. Andrew’s on Saturday at Pallotti.

After picking up a win in their opener, the Admirals aren’t satisfied, Harvey said.

“We’ve got to prove people wrong,” he said. “People are sleeping on us and people don’t believe in us.”

#11 RIVERDALE BAPTIST 50, #14 GLENELG COUNTRY 35

The Crusaders jumped on top of a shorthanded Dragons team and never relented en route to a blowout win.

Jackson Furman had 14 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists and Ashley Simms 10 points and 8 boards to lead the Crusaders.

Riverdale Baptist led 19-3 after one quarter. Glenelg Country’s second field goal of the game came on a Jalen Baker jumper with 3:32 to go in the second quarter, and Riverdale went into the break with a 28-9 lead.

The Crusaders led 39-21 after three quarters and were never seriously challenged down the stretch.

The Dragons played without their leading scorer in 2025 guard Pat Curtin, as well as 7-foot-1 freshman center Akol Nyok.

Baker led Glenelg Country with 15 points and 6 rebounds.

Riverdale will face No. 6 DeMatha on Saturday at Pallotti.
