SALISBURY, MD - The third day of the 42nd Annual Governor’s Challenge featured some of the most explosive offensive performances of the week, as the individual single-game record fell and several other players put up impressive numbers. Here’s a look at some of the top storylines from Saturday:
East New York Family Academy 2025 guard Arianna Mercado after making Governor's Challenge history.
Less than 24 hours after the Governor’s Challenge single-game scoring record was nearly matched, Arianna Mercado blew past it.
The East New York Family Academy 2025 guard and William & Mary commit scored an event-record 50 points, carrying her team offensively in a 61-57 double-overtime win over Freedom-Woodbridge (Va.) in the Moolah Girls Bracket #1 Championship at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday.
“Yeah, it did,” Mercado said when asked if she felt like it was going to be a special day coming into the game. “From the beginning, I saw that the players on the other team were trying to get into my head, and I feel like that’s something that kind of sparked my energy, like, even more. Because I was going to go hard regardless, but I feel like when the other team starts to come at me and my teammates, it kind of gives me that extra push to want to go even more than I normally do. So from that point I already knew that, like, ‘Yeah, this game is going to come down to the wire.’ Double overtime was not what I expected, but I just knew I was going to do everything I could to help my team get that ‘W.’”
Mercado - who plays on the Dominican Republic National Team - finished 14-of-20 from the field, 3-of-3 from 3-point range and knocked down 19 of her 20 attempts at the free throw line.
Family Academy coach Fred Fortune said he’s coached Mercado since she was nine years old, adding that she’s often called on to carry the bulk of her team’s scoring load.
“She had a stellar performance,” Fortune said. “The way she was able to break down her defenders either through backdoor cuts or just with her dribble-drive, I think she did a great job of penetrating and finding her spots. None of the shots she took were forced shots, but she was aggressive, and we needed every single last one of those points.”
The previous Governor’s Challenge scoring record of 44 points was set by Harford Christian’s Derreck Orr in 2017. On Friday, City (Md.) 2025 guard Omarr Smith fell just short of matching that mark, finishing with 43 in a loss to South Lakes (Va.)
Now, Mercado stands alone atop the record book.
“Today was my first time ever getting 50,” she said. “I think last year I got 45, but that was the highest I’d ever gotten. After the game [today] I was just so locked in and focused on the game and trying to win that my Dad and the coach came up to me, like, ‘You had 50,’ and I was like, ‘Wait, I had what?!’ I couldn't believe it; I did not know I did all that, but hey.”
Even more than the record, though, Mercado said she was pleased with the opportunity that attending the Governor’s Challenge for the first time provided her teammates.
“It means a lot,” she said. “Our team has been going through a lot personally and on the court since the beginning of the season, so to get a win like this just shows that this is kind of our peak point, and just shows what we’re capable of doing. When we come into the New Year, we have more expectations for ourselves, and now it's not just something that we’re saying, it's something that we know is possible and we’ve witnessed it, so it's going to be a lot easier for us to reach our goals that we want during the season.”
2025 guard Olivia Eugene added 8 points for the Eagles.
2025 forward Savannah Price had 24 points to lead Freedom, while 2025 guard Keilani Johnson finished with 14.
Saturday’s Elite Showcase matchup between DeMatha (Md.) and Westtown (Pa.) was one of the more anticipated games of the evening set, but the Stags made sure it wasn’t competitive.
DeMatha held Westtown to just six made shots in a dominating 47-22 victory.
“We’re built on playing with great defensive energy and effort,” Stags coach Mike Jones said, “so we really tried to like, fine-tune what we wanted to do defensively. We wanted to try to just contain, contest, and limit them to one shot. We went over it in detail and we had a couple of good days of practice and the boys were ready to execute.”
DeMatha led 14-5 after one quarter and 23-11 at the half as the Moose struggled to get anything going offensively. They shot a combined 15 percent from the field (6-for-40). Xavier commit Jayden Forsythe led Westtown with 8 points and 8 rebounds.
“We knew they had good shooters and we knew they were high-level guys,” Jone said. “Supposedly the five guys were all Division I players, so what we wanted to do was try to make them uncomfortable. We knew that we wanted to take away what they did well, force them to their weak hand and see if they could still make plays. We wanted to shrink the court from a defensive standpoint and just extend our defense out to make them really work. We did a good job of that all four quarters - they scored five points the first quarter, six the second, five and then six. So we did a solid job of not being complacent.”
Jacob Wallace had 9 points and 4 assists to lead DeMatha, while Ashton Meeks had 7 and 4 dimes.
Next up for DeMatha is an Elite Showcase contest against Socal Academy at 3:15 pm on Sunday.
“[Tournament Director] James [Simmons] with the Governor’s Challenge, he runs a great event,” Jones said. “We always ask for the top teams, because we know we’re trying to prepare ourselves for the grueling [Washington Catholic Athletic Conference]. On the road we don’t get a lot of calls, so we need to find a way just to persevere and not make excuses but make the adjustment, and we did that today.”
The St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School (Va.) Saints.
Saturday’s Bracket #10 Final between St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (Va.) and St. Mary’s-Ryken (Md.) was a rematch of a recent title matchup that saw SS&SA down Ryken in the Saints’ own Sleepy Thompson Tournament earlier this month.
The Saints took Round 2 as well - pulling away in the second half for a 63-52 victory at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center - but the route there was a little different.
“We played them a few weeks ago in our own tournament and it was the opposite story,” Saints senior Colin Pollock said. “We came out and got up 20 at the half and slept the second half, so this time I think we came out a little overconfident, you know, sleeping in the first half and we were down. I wasn’t playing my best, and then in the second half as seniors me and Riley [Jacobs] just took over, like, ‘It’s now or never.’ In the third quarter, shutdown defense was the key, and then we went on the other end and made the right plays.”
The UMBC-bound Jacobs finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Saints, while Pollock -a Navy commit - added 15 and 2026 guard Julian Burgdorf finished with 14.
The Saints trailed 14-12 after one quarter and 28-22 at halftime, but flipped the game around by outsourcing the Knights 25-6 in the third quarter.
“We had a slow start in the first half, so we had to pick it up in the second half,” Jacobs said. “Our guys weren’t knocking down shots, so when we went in at halftime our coach [Andre Hunter] really emphasized defense - even when the offense isn’t working out, you can always bet on defense. So we just came out with a lot of energy and played hard.”
Pollock and Burgdorf scored all of their points in the second half to help key the Saints offensively.
“We just started playing harder, in my opinion,” Burgdorf said. “In the first half we came out a little slow and weren’t making that many shots, but we knew they were going to fall in the second half. So we kept shooting and kept finding our teammates and trusting each other.”
Elijah Miller had 15 points to lead Ryken, which got 13 from Isaiah Carpenter and 11 from Derrick Robinson.
Riverdale Baptist (Md.) 2026 guard Wisdom Mintz.
Riverdale Baptist used a hot start - keyed by 2026 guard Wisdom Mintz - en route to a 69-63 Bracket #11 Championship victory over Malvern Prep (Pa.)
Mintz scored 16 of his game-high 21 points in the first half as the Crusaders leapt out to a 27-12 lead after the first quarter.
Mintz finished the game 6-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 from 3-point range.
“I was just taking what the defense gave me,” Mintz said. “My teammates were penetrating the defense and hitting me on open shots, and then I was just taking what the defense gave me when I had the ball and trying to make a play.”
Jacoby Briscoe had 14 points and 6 rebounds for Riverdale, while Cannon Greene had 12 points and Ean McLaughlin added 10.
Nick Harken had 19 points and 9 rebounds for Malvern, while Hanif McFadden, Jr. added 12 points.
“The key down the stretch was they went into the zone, and we knew we just had to stay composed and finish out our possessions and defend as well,” Mintz said, “because they were a good team and they weren’t going to lay down. We dominated the man so they had to go zone, and we had to just keep hitting shots and keep attacking the zone, and that’s how we closed it out.”
The victory capped a successful Governor’s Challenge trip for Riverdale Baptist as a whole, the Riverdale girls claimed a bracket championship as well with a 67-44 win over Sanford (DE).
“It’s huge for us,” Mintz said of the win. “We had a few losses for us that were tough for us, but it's huge for us to bounce back the way we did. We had a few big wins and we’re just trying to keep up the momentum.”
Siena commit Francis Folefac went to work for Mt. Zion Prep (Md.) in his team’s 90-85 Elite Showcase win over Neumann-Goretti (Pa.) - dropping a game-high 37 points - but for him, it was just another day at the office.
“I’ve just got to treat it like every other game,” Folefac said. “I just try to play within the system; coach wants us to play inside-out, so I know the ball’s going to come to me a couple of times. I’m just trying to play my game all-around and involve my teammates as much as I can. It just worked for me tonight.”
The 6-foot-7, 240-pound Folefac gave the Saints trouble all night, and finished 13-of-17 from the field and 12-of-14 from the free throw line for Mt. Zion.
Jerome Williams, Jr. had 16 points for the Warriors, while Kam Wylie had 13 and Donovan Peterson 12.
“[We’re] Just staying locked in as much as we can,” Folefac said of his team. “We’re surrounded by guys with a lot of skill and that know basketball, so just kind of having everybody get to know their roles and playing harder and playing with passion and just playing together, I feel like that’s the biggest part for us. That’s just been kind of a consistent thing, and something else that we’re trying to improve for bigger games.”
Neumann-Goretti 2026 guard DeShawn Yates had a triple-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists. Alassan N’Diaye led the Saints in scoring with 25, while Stephon Ashley-Wright went for 24.
South Lakes (Va.) 2025 wing Jordan Scott.
Michigan State commit Jordan Scott shined again in a win for South Lakes (Va.), going for 27 points, 17 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals as the Seahawks downed Dover (DE) 65-48 for a Bracket Championship.
The matchup of respective defending state champions was close throughout, but the Seahawks took control of the game in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Senators 26-10 in the frame.
2026 guard Merrick Rillstone added 17 points for South Lakes. JayVion Denis had 14 points to lead Dover, while Kameron Randolph had 10.
The anticipated Elite Showcase matchup between Greensboro Day (NC) and Largo (Md.) never materialized, as the Bengals used an 18-9 second-quarter run to seize control of a close game and never looked back in a 72-34 victory.
Greensboro Day led just 11-9 after a quarter, but that was as close as it got, as the Bengals knocked down a seemingly endless array of open looks and continuously found free runners in transition. Largo turned the ball over 20 times and managed just six assists.
Marty Giant had 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting to lead the Bengals, while Trace Moffitt added 10.
Largo star Cam Ward had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lions, while Jalen Johnson added 9 points.
The Boys' Latin School (Md.) Lakers.
Boys' Latin (Md.) coach Dominic Milburn said he's been able to rely on his team's depth so far this season, with different players stepping up in key situations.
That ability was on display again Saturday, as the Lakers had four players score in double figures as they held off Sanford (DE) 65-61 to claim the Bracket #9 Championship.
2027 guard Darrell Davis, 2025 guard David Pridgen and 2025 forward Elijah Fonotia had 13 points apiece for the Lakers, while 2026 guard Ghavyne Saint Pierre had 10.
“It’s like that every night,” Milburn said of his team’s production. “We have a different leading scorer almost every night, and our second-leading scorer is almost different every night. So it's a lot of fun to watch and it's a lot of fun to see who steps up at that moment, because you never really know with us.”
Davis agreed with his coach, adding that the team prides itself on sticking with each other through adversity.
“It's very big, because one [player] can always have an off day,” he said. “The fact that we can have someone step up at any given time is amazing, because we’re going to need that every game. All the tight games, we’ve had to pull through with somebody new. Like, what if their team scouts and knows everything they’re doing? Somebody else has got to step up.”
Saturday’s game was tight throughout, with six lead changes and seven ties. The teams were knotted at 50-50 entering the final quarter, but the Lakers made the plays down the stretch to seal the victory, which Milburn was particularly glad to see.
“A couple of weeks ago we lost a couple of games just because we lost composure,” he said “and I think the last two or three games we haven’t lost composure completely. We’ve probably had one or two turnovers here or there, but here we really, really, really finished well. We hit our free throws, made some big shots, got some big stops and big rebounds, so it was good. It was a team effort.”
The victory capped a strong December break stretch for Boys’ Latin, which came into the Governor’s Challenge off of a nice win over a nationally-ranked Mt. Zion Prep (Md.) team last week.
“This Christmas week has been phenomenal for us,” Milburn said. “We go beat Mt. Zion and then you come here and beat a Kennedy Catholic team from New York that really had a lot of expectations to come down here and make some noise. And that Sanford team is really good. So it was really big for us to grit this one out. We have a couple of days off and get a beak, and then we’ve got a two-month run - hopefully a three-month run. It’s going to be fun.”
2025 guard and Delaware commit Jayden Sanford posted a monster stat line for Sanford, going for 20 points, 22 rebounds and 3 blocks. Khareem Hart added 13 points and Nico McNeil had 11.
St. John's Catholic Prep (Md.) 2026 forward Aaron Shoffner.
Trailing by as many as 15 points in the first quarter and by double digits in the fourth, the St. John’s Catholic Prep (Md.) Vikings slowly chipped away in their Bracket #16 opener against Holy Ghost Prep, eventually climbing to within striking range in the final seconds of the fourth quarter.
That’s where things really started to get interesting.
After SJCP’s Ben Shoffner tied the game at 69-69 with 33.2 seconds remaining, Holy Ghost 2025 guard Adrien Varella made a pair of free throws to put his team up 71-69 with 15.6 to play. On the ensuing possession the Vikings moved the ball around until point guard Christian Walker found Shoffner, who came up with another big bucket, draining a jumper as time expired to force overtime.
Late in the extra period, Mamadou Sako split a pair of free throws to give his team an 80-79 lead with 19.8 remaining. The SJCP defense held and Holy Ghost Prep was forced to foul Aaron Shoffner, sending him to the line with 3.5 seconds remaining to try to put his team up three.
Aaron Shoffner coolly iced both, putting the Viking ahead 82-79.
“I was confident, you know?” Shoffner recalled. “I shoot all the time - I shoot everyday - so those free throws were just putting the icing on the cake, you know?
Holy Ghost inbounded to halfcourt and called timeout with 3.0 to play. Coming out of a timeout they got the ball to Varella for a good look at a tying 3, but the ball rimmed out as time expired and the Vikings capped their rally with an 82-79 OT win at Wicomico High School.
“It just started on defense,” Aaron Shoffner said. “In the fourth quarter we were down by 10, and coach [Devin Williams] kept telling us we’ve got to get stops and that’s going to propel us. Our defense led to our offense, you know? The more we started playing defense and the more we started getting stops, the more we started making shots and the more we started feeling more confident. Then in the overtime we just had the momentum and it carried us through to the win.”
Aaron Shoffer finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Vikings, while Sako had 14 and 11 boards and Walker 11 points and 6 rebounds. Ben Shoffner had 9 points.
Varella had a game-high 34 for the Firebirds, while Zak Sharlin had 18 and Robbie Segarich 11.
Socal Academy made its Governor's Challenge debut with a gritty 76-72 win over Jackson-Reed (DC). Four SoCal players scored in double figures - led by Trent Maclean's 15 - to offset a 31-point outing from Jackson-Reed 2025 forward and UMass-Lowell commit JJ Massaquoi. ... JM Bennett (Md.) 2025 guard Zakai Smullen continued his strong week, going for 36 points on 16-of-20 shooting while grabbing 11 rebounds and handing out 7 assists in a 79-56 win over Sussex Central (DE). … New Mexico State-bound City (Md.) 2025 guard Omarr Smith notched 23 points and 13 rebounds as the Black Knights bounced back from an opening loss with a 66-55 win over Stephen Decatur (Md.). … Polytech (DE) 2027 guard Aven Diamond had 26 points, 11 rebounds, 5 steals, & 4 assists in a 67-64 loss to Pocomoke (Md.) at WHS. ... Brooklyn Collegiate (NY) held off a furious Sandy Spring Friends (Md.) rally to hold on for a 55-52 victory at the WY&CC. Flavio Jean and Antoine Bramble led Collegiate with 12 points apiece, while Shane Wellman and Darrion Sardo had 17 each for the Wildebeests. ... Queen Anne's (Md.) 2027 forward Bea Holthaus had 19 points and 12 blocks to lead the Lions to a 40-39 overtime victory over Bethesda-Chevy Chase (Md.) int he Moolah Girls Bracket #2 final at UMES.
