Largo (Md.) star senior forward Cam Ward became the Maryland Public School All-Time Leading Scorer in his team's 91-75 playoff victory over Fairmont Heights on Tuesday night, surpassing the mark of 2,611 points set by Pocomoke's Mike Roberts in 1992.
The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association does not keep track of individual career scoring records, but Roberts - who went on to play collegiately at Colgate - has long been believed to hold the mark. Colonel Richardson's Albert Mouring - who played collegiately at UConn - is third with 2,513 points, and Oakdale's Zach Thomas (Bucknell is believed to be fourth on the career scoring list at 2,281 points.
The Michigan State commit entered Tuesday's Maryland Class 2A semifinal with Fairmont 22 points away from Roberts' mark. He equalled it while getting fouled on a dunk in the third quarter, and passed it with he ensuing free throw.
The mark has long been an attainable target for the prolific Ward, who scored 1,000 points in just 36 games his freshman season. After leading Largo to the Maryland 2A state title as a junior, he is aiming for a repeat to close his spectacular prep career.
Largo plays at Lackey in the 2A South Region Championship on Thursday.
