PLAYER OF THE YEAR: CHRIS LYKES, GONZAGA
The Miami-bound Lykes saved his best season for last, averaging 18.6 points, 4.4 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game while leading the Purple Eagles to a clean sweep of the WCAC, DCSAA and Alhambra Catholic Invitational titles. Lykes wrote his name atop Gonzaga’s record book as well, moving into first place on the storied program’s all-time scoring list with 2,266 points.

COACH OF THE YEAR: ANGELO HERNANDEZ, WOODROW WILSON
Hernandez brought championship basketball to Tenleytown, leading the Tigers to a 29-4 record - a run that included a school-record 21-game win streak - and their first DCIAA championship since 1984.

FIRST TEAM

ELIJAH CLARANCE, ST. MARIA GORETTI (MD) 2017 GUARD

The Illinois State commit averaged 18.7 points per game to lead the Gaels to the Independent-Parochial School League (IPSL) Championship and a share of the Baltimore Catholic League regular-season title. He developed a knack for clutch shots, hitting buzzer-beating game-winners against Mount St. Joseph, St. James and DeMatha.

DOM FRAGALA, CHAMPE (VA) 2017 GUARD
The Niagara commit was the area’s most lethal scorer this year, averaging a Playstation-esque 36.9 points per game while posting a seemingly endless series of ridiculous point totals. He dropped 63 points in a five-point December win against Freedom-South Riding and followed it with 52 in a one-point win against Briar Woods. He also had games of 49, 46, 41 and 40, and was held under 30 points just four times the entire season. Fragala nearly eclipsed Allen Iverson’s state single-season scoring record.

LUKA GARZA, MARET (DC) 2017 CENTER
The area’s most dominant post presence put together another monster year, averaging 24.5 points and 11.7 rebounds per game to lead the Frogs to runner-up finishes in the MAC and DCSAA finals. Garza - who was named the Gatorade DC Player of the Year - will play his college ball at Iowa.

LAQUILL HARDNETT, PERRY HALL (MD) 2018 FORWARD

6-foot-9 with point guard instincts - he was one until a major growth spurt - the versatile Hardnett averaged 12.9 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists per game to lead Perry Hall to their first state title in school history.

JERMAINE HARRIS, ROCK CREEK CHRISTIAN (MD) 2018 FORWARD

Harris began to realize his potential on both ends of the floor, and averaged 13.7 points per game to earn Capital Beltway Athletic Association Player of The Year honors as the Eagles cruised to the league regular-season crown.

JORDAN MILLER, LOUDOUN VALLEY (VA) 2018 GUARD
The 6-foot-6 Miller was a matchup problem all season, averaging 22.9 points per game to lead the Vikings to their first state championship in school history. He scored in double-figures in every game and posted 22 games with 20 or more points, including four with 30-plus.

NANA OPOKU, POTOMAC (VA) 2017 FORWARD
Always a defensive force, the Mount St. Mary’s-bound Opoku emerged as a consistent offensive threat this year, averaging a team-high 15 points per game as the Panthers made another deep playoff run.

DE’VONDRE PERRY, POLY (MD) 2017 GUARD

Perry capped his standout career in style, averaging 19.2 points, 9.1 rebounds, 4.5 assists. 3.2 blocks and 2.3 steals per game to lead Poly to the first state championship in school history. He shot 54 percent from the field and 45 percent from 3-point range, and provided the Engineers with an imposing physical presence on both ends of the floor.

MARVIN PRICE, PATTERSON (MD) 2019 GUARD

Price made an immediate and impressive impact after transferring from DeMatha, posting 23 points, 8 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game to lead Patterson to the Baltimore City title and the 2A State Championship.

JALEN SMITH, MOUNT ST. JOSEPH’S (MD) 2019 FORWARD

Smith broke out with 17 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks per game and 2.5 blocks per game to lead the Gaels to the MIAA A Conference and Baltimore Catholic League crowns. He was named BCL Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, as well as the Gatorade State Player of the Year.
