BOWIE, MD - The 5th annual DMVelite 80 attracted many of the area’s best players to Bowie City Gym on September 9, giving them an opportunity to get some high-level work in in front of media and college coaches while participating in seminars on life skills and college eligibility.

The highly-touted Class of 2020 made its DMVelite 80 debut, and here’s a look at some of the standout performers:

EARL TIMBERLAKE, DEMATHA (MD) GUARD
One of the top players in the 2020 Class, Timberlake showcased his versatility on a talent-laden Team Black squad while averaging 5.7 points and 2 rebounds per game.

“It was fun,” he said of the event. “A lot of great players, but my team was the best. We were pretty loaded, and there were a lot of great players in the area who came out to this.”

At 6-foot-6 and 203 pounds Timberlake already has a college frame, and he’s gotten more and more comfortable with the ball in his hands on the perimeter, particularly when it comes to initiating an offense. He gets teammates involved and sees the floor well, and his size allows to blow by or post up smaller guards.

Its defense, though, where Timberlake can truly control a game. He emerged as a top-tier perimeter defender last year at Rock Creek Christian, but admitted that aspect of his game only recently became a focal point.

“I actually learned it in eighth grade when I met [Team Takeover founder] Keith Stevens,” Timberlake said. “He told me if I wanted to play for him I’d have to play defense. It wasn’t really something that I worried about [before], but it just stuck with me.”

Georgetown, Kansas State, Penn State and Rhode Island have all extended scholarship offers to Timberlake, who will look to continue his ascension with a move to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference.

JUSTIN LEWIS, POLY (MD) FORWARD
Lewis flashed his versatile offensive skillset while posting 10.7 points per game on 15-of-18 shooting from the field. He also tallied 2.3 rebounds per game.

The 6-foot-7, 220-pound Lewis had a strong summer with Team Melo, picking up offers from Boston College, Kansas State, Old Dominion and Penn State to go along with Georgia Tech, St. John’s and UNLV. He’s increased his shooting range and gotten better as a ball handler.

“I feel as though my game really improved,” he said. “I felt as though I’m doing what I’m supposed to do, and if I keep working then I can be what I want to be in life.”
Lewis was also involved in one of the summer’s biggest transfers, moving from Calvert Hall (Md.) to join defending Maryland 3A state champion Poly.

“I feel as though Coach Sam [Brand] will help me get better,” he said. “He’s a gym rat and I feel as though it’s the best fit for me.”
 

CHE EVANS, JR., DULANEY (MD) GUARD
Evans is one of the area’s most highly-touted prospects, and showed why in limited action.

“It’s a great event with a lot of competition in here and kids playing hard and trying to be seen,” he said of the DMVelite 80. “I come out here and just try to play hard every play.”

The 6-foot-6 Evans is smooth and athletic, with the ability to make game-changing plays on both ends of the court. His’ jumper looked more consistent this summer, and he’s ready to build on a strong freshman season at Dulaney that was preceded by plenty of hype.

“I feel like everybody every game was just trying to come at me because of my name,” Evans said. “I’m prepared for it now this year, and I know what’s coming at me every game so I know what it takes.”

Evans’ list of offers currently includes Boston College, Georgia Tech, Kansas State, Old Dominion, Penn State, St. John’s, TCU and UNLV.

MARCHELUS AVERY, LIFE CHRISTIAN (VA) WING
Avery impressed with his size (6-foot-8) and speed combination, and displayed quick first step and good strength around the basket.

Avery averaged 7.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game for Team Black, highlighted by a 14-point performance in a 57-52 win over Team Red. He finished 8-of-10 from the free throw line for the day, tying for the event lead in free throws made and attempted.

DARIUS MILES, THEODORE ROOSEVELT (DC) WING
After a strong freshman season with Roosevelt, Miles continued to impress this summer with DC Blue Devils.

The 6-foot-5 Miles sees the floor well and tied for the event lead in assists at 2 per game. He averaged 4.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per contest while also competing hard on the defensive end, highlighted by a jaw-dropping chase down block against Team Purple.

TYMU CHENERY, EPISCOPAL (VA) WING
Chenery was one of the 2020 classes most consistent performers, averaging 8 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field to go with 1.7 rebounds and 2 assists per game.

The 6-foot-5 Chenery is long and athletic with good quickness - including a nice first step to the basket - and displayed a strong ability to finish at the rim. He transferred from Dunbar (Md.) to Episcopal this summer and reclassed from 2019 to 2020, and should see his recruitment reach another level with strong high school season.

CHURCHILL BOUNDS, STEPHEN DECATUR (MD.) FORWARD
The 6-foot-9 Bounds has the potential to be a dominant player on the block with his size, strength and impressive footwork.

Bounds didn’t put up massive numbers, but his 3 points and 3 rebounds per game - along with with his willingness to set screens, defend and assorted other dirty work - impressed many of the coaches and scouts in attendance. He has a strong base and does a very effective job of posting up and sealing.

Bounds will step into an expanded offensive role for Decatur this season following the graduation of Keve Aluma (Wofford), and should emerge as a two-way force on the Eastern Shore.
