MCKINLEY TECH’S NEWTON CONTINUES RISE

McKinley Tech’s Atwood “Woody” Newton (RIGHT) has become one of DC’s most intriguing prospects, and he’s feeling confident heading into the season after a strong summer with Team Thrill 16U.

“I feel as though my recruitment picked up a lot,” he said, “and people got to really see the real Woody Newton, skill-wise. I think I’m a tall wing that can do multiple things. I can put the ball on the ground a little bit, shoot the 3 and do it all. I think I’m real versatile and nobody can check me.”

The 6-foot-7, 184-pound Newton displayed that versatility in a 41-34 win over Indian Creek, posting a team-high 13 points. He had several big dunks and was aggressive, attacking the rim offensively and playing the passing lanes on the defensive end.

Newton has an offer from Kansas State, and mentioned interest from Central Florida, George Mason, Georgetown, Maryland and Oklahoma State, among others. He will graduate in 2019 and said he’s planning to do a post-graduate year at Mount Zion Prep (Md.).

“I think it’s going to help me a lot,” Newton said of prep school. “I think I’m going to get stronger and better. That’s a year for me to get better overall and just add on to my game.”

CAPITOL CHRISTIAN RELOADS

After a disappointing finish in the Capital Beltway Athletic Association last year, Capitol Christian is back with a new look - in more ways than one.

CCA has added several impact transfers, and made some cosmetic changes as well, changing mascots from the Eagles to the Storm and eschewing their black and blue color scheme for the red and black that founder/coach Van Whitfield’s former Princeton Day Academy team’s sported.

On the floor, the Storm looks ready to benefit from an infusion of perimeter talent.

“We’ve got some nice good incoming players - Isaiah Borders, Barly Kanu, Darien Simmons,” 2018 wing Jordan Bolder said. “And there’s more chemistry this year than there was last year, so I feel like everybody will get their share of the points, everybody will share the ball and we’ll just work together to get the job done this year.”

Bolder looks ready to make a bigger impact in his second season with CCA after coming over from Douglass. The 6-foot-5, 190-pounder had 13 points in a blowout win over Team Rampage, showing his range from deep and ability to finish in transition.

Among CCA’s other top returnees is 2019 point guard Judah Jordan, who enjoyed a nice summer with Team Melo. The 6-foot-2 Jordan lists offers from Hampton, Penn State and Towson.

“I think our team is going to be really good, as long as we build our chemistry and this Fall League I feel like is going to help,” Jordan said. “We really have a lot of good players, so we’re going to be solid this year.”

INDIAN CREEK’S WILLIAMS READY FOR BREAKOUT

Coming off of a strong summer with Maryland 3D’s 16U squad, 2019 forward Khalil Williams looks ready to make an impact on the high school season.

“I’m going to make sure just to have a ‘get the ball’ mentality,” he said. “That’s what they told me all the time with Maryland 3D - ‘Just get the ball and make things work, because you do it very well.’”

Indeed, the 6-foot-6, 175-pound Williams showcased his versatility in a 41-34 loss to McKinley Tech last Saturday, posting a team-high 12 points. He displayed a nice face-up jumper, ran the floor hard and crashed the boards on both ends. His length and quickness makes him an effective defender on the wing, and he’s strong enough to hold his own in the post.

Williams - who spent his freshman year at Old Mill - should emerge as a nice inside-outside presence to complement Indian Creek star 2018 guard Malik McKinney, who missed Saturday’s game for a college visit. He said he’s gotten some feelers from a handful of smaller Division I programs, and is playing with confidence after his summer with 3D.

“It went really well,” he said. “I had a breakout season and it was very productive - I enjoyed it.”
