As the 2017-18 high school season gets underway, a host of familiar names will be suiting up for different teams.

This summer was as busy with movement as ever, and saw an interesting exodus of talent as several high-profile players moved to schools outside of the area. The Class of 2019 was especially hard-hit, with players such as D’Marco Baucum, Karim Coulibaly, Sherif Kenney, Marvin Price, Johnathan McGriff, Makhi Mitchell, Makhel Mitchell, Olanrewaju Olamuyiwa and Tyrese Samuel left.

Those losses were countered by some intriguing additions. John Carroll 2019 wing Yavuz Gultekin immigrated from Turkey this summer and has immediately put himself on the map, winning DMVelite 80 MVP honors and earning several Division I scholarship offers. The closure of New Jersey powerhouse St. Anthony provided the area with some talent, as Bishop McNamara added former Friars wing Nigel Marshall and guard Ibn Williams, and DuVal picked up wing Lonce Bethea.

Here’s a look at a few of the transfers who should make an immediate impact this year:

Qudus Wahab, 2019 Forward/Center - Virginia Academy to Flint Hill (Va.)
The 6-foot-10 Wahab (TOP) has steadily progressed on the offensive end, and is primed for a breakout junior season. He’ll immediately give the Huskies a force on both ends of the floor, and forms a formidable frontcourt tandem with 6-foot-7 2020 forward Dowar Jioklow. Wahab most recently added offers from Old Dominion, St. Joseph’s and St. John’s to go with Clemson, Pitt, Rutgers, Seton Hall and Virginia Tech, among others.

Earl Timberlake, 2020 Guard - Rock Creek Christian (Md.) to DeMatha (Md.)
Timberlake was one of the most high-profile players to move this summer, heading to DeMatha after a very strong varsity debut season at Rock Creek. Timberlake will provide the Stags with another versatile wing scorer and defender. Timbeerlake saw his recruitment kick up this summer and fall, with Georgeown and Providence offering scholarships. He already held offers from Kansas State, Penn State and Virginia Tech.

Jason Murphy, 2019 Forward - Chapelgate Christian (Md.) to St. Frances (Md.)
After two strong years at Chapelgate, Murphy is moving up to another level of competition with the Panthers. He’ll give St. Frances another option inside on the offensive end and a steady defensive presence to go with frontline mate Koran Moore.

Josh Cornish, 2018 Guard - Calvert Hall (Md.) to Dulaney (Md.)
A Southern Utah commit, Cornish joins a talented Dulaney group that will includes highly-touted freshmen Ike Cornish - his brother - and Ryan Conway, as well as sophomore star guard Che Evans. Cornish is one of the area’s top shooters, and the sheer amount of offensive options is sure to give the Lions’ opponents trouble all year.

Justin Lewis, 2020 Forward - Calvert Hall (Md.) to Poly (Md.)
The defending 3A state champion Engineers lost DMVelite Maryland Player of the Year Dre Perry (Temple), but reinforced with one of the area’s top young forwards. Lewis has improved in all aspects – particularly his shooting – and will help provide a formidable tandem with senior guard and Long Beach State commit Demetrius Mims.

Amir Harris, 2018 Wing - St. Maria Goretti (Md.) to St. James (Md.)
Harris - a former Rhode Island commit - made the rare rival-to-rival move, jumping from Goretti to St. James. He’ll provide an offensive boost on the wing for a squad that lost Wake Forest commit Isaiah Mucius to transfer (Brewster Academy).

Jay Heath, 2019 Guard - Bishop O’Connell (Va.) to Wilson (DC)
Wilson added pieces to its already solid core in Heath and fellow former O’Connell guard Dimingus Stevens, making them the prohibitive favorite to repeat as DCIAA champions.

“I think it’ll help me a lot - I get to play my game now,” Heath said during the DMVelite Fall League. “It’s really my playing style over here and stuff like that. … I’m just coming in and trying to find a way to help the team get better. They told me score the ball, so I try to score, rebound and stuff like that.”

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Heath said he has heard from George Mason, James Madison, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Rhode Island and Xavier, but is planning to do a prep year and join the Class of 2020.

Quentin Millora-Brown, 2019 Forward - Bishop O’Connell (Va.) to South County (Va.)
The Rice commit gives the Stallions a major presence in the middle as they look to make a run. At 6-foot-9 with a high motor and a nice offensive arsenal, he’ll be a matchup nightmare for opponents all season.

Devon Sims, 2018 Wing - Paul VI (Va.) to Potomac (Va.)
Sims had a breakout season at Paul VI, and now will be counted on to help replace the production of Nana Opoku (Mount St. Mary’s) and Jamal Washington (Millersville). He currently holds Division II offers from Concordia and Fairmont State but should see his recruitment take off with a strong senior campaign for the Panthers.

Michael Sumner, 2020 Guard - Oxon Hill (Md.) to St. Mary's-Ryken (Md.)
Sumner starred in his freshman season at Oxon Hill, emerging as the Clippers’ top scorer. He’ll look to continue that impact in the WCAC under new Ryken coach Walter Booth. Sumner is a skilled and physical scorer with a lethal touch from outside.

Elijah Wood, 2020 Guard – St. Andrews (Md.) to Bethesda-Chavy Chase (Md.)
After a quiet freshman year at St. Andrews, the 6-fooot-4 Wood saw his recruitment explode this summer, showing enough potential to pick up offers from Auburn, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Rhode Island, South Florida, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and UNLV, among others.

Tymu Chenery, 2020 Wing - Dunbar (Md.) to Episcopal (Va.)
After a strong sophomore season at Dunbar, Chenery made the move to Episcopal, where he is reclassifying to 2020. Chenery began coming into his own as a scorer last season and enjoyed a strong summer with Team BBC.
