2017 Governor's Challenge Preview

For another year, Salisbury, MD will become the epicenter of the holiday basketball landscape as the Governor’s Challenge returns to the Eastern Shore December 26-30, 2017.

Now in its 37th year, the Governor’s Challenge has expanded to become the largest holiday basketball tournament in the country, with 120 teams in Varsity Boys and Girls, Junior Varsity Boys and Prep School Boys brackets.

This year’s field includes schools from DC, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Georgia, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and South Carolina, as well as two from Canada.

This year’s DMVelite Showcase Division will include defending Maryland 3A state champion Baltimore Poly, defending Maryland Private Schools Tournament champion Riverdale Baptist and reigning DCIAA champion Woodrow Wilson, as well as Carolina Basketball Academy (NC), Gilman (Md.), Gray Collegiate (SC), Lake Taylor (Va.), Liberty Heights (NC), Lincoln Academy (Ga.), Olympic (NC), Rock Creek Christian (Md.), Sanford (DE), St. Georges (DE), Stephen Decatur (Md.), Virginia Academy and event host Wicomico (Md.).

Among the players to watch are St. Andrews (RI) 2018 forward Cole Swider (Villanova), Gray Collegiate (SC) 2019 forward Juwan Gary, Legacy Early (SC) 2018 guard Sharone Wright (Wake Forest), Poly (Md.) 2018 wing Demetrius Mims (Long Beach State) and 2020 forward Justin Lewis, Riverdale Baptist (Md.) 2018 guard Donovann Toatley (Tennessee-Chattanooga),  Rock Creek Christian (Md.) 2018 forward Jermaine Harris (Rhode Island), Sanford (DE) 2020 guard Jyare Davis, Liberty Heights (NC) 2018 guard Michael Wynn (East Carolina), Stephen Decatur (Md.) 2018 guard Kevon Voyles (Marylad-Eastern Shore), Lincoln Academy (Ga.) forward Giir Ring and Canada Topflight Academy 2021 guard Muon Reath – the top-rated freshman in Canada.

The action begins at 11:45 am Tuesday at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center and runs through Saturday’s final game, which tips off at 8:45 pm.
