2016 DMVelite 80: 2017 Notebook

BOWIE, MD - The 4th annual DMVelite 80 attracted many of the area’s best players to Bowie City Gym on September 10, giving them an opportunity to get some high-level work in in front of media and college coaches.

The 2017 Class produced the event’s Most Valuable Player in National Christian (Md.) forward Terence Lewis, and a host of other standout performances.

DARRON BARNES, WISE (MD) FORWARD [PICTURED]
Barnes’ all-around skillset was on display Saturday, as he finished with averages of 7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists (good for second overall in the event) in three games. He showed nice playmaking ability and saw the floor well, finishing with an outstanding 10-1 assist to turnover ratio. (MH)

DONALD CAREY, DOUGLASS-PG (MD) GUARD
Carey, who holds offers from Howard, George Mason and St. Peters (NJ), displayed his sharp basketball IQ throughout the day, commanding the lead guard position while filling the stat sheet in a variety of ways. His 19 total points and 47 percent field goal percentage both tied for second on his team. Carey also notched seven rebounds and dished out four assists. (KM)

BRANDON EDMOND, ST. JOHN PAUL THE GREAT (VA) GUARD
Edmond has a well-deserved reputation as a capable shooter, but showed he’s a tough combo guard who isn’t afraid to mix it up among bigger players (4.3 rebounds per game). Edmond - who has interest from several Division 2 programs, also averaged 5.3 points per game. (MH)

MELO EGGLESTON, NOTRE DAME PREP (MA) GUARD
The Wake Forest commit drew match-up problems the entire event with his rare combination of superior length and superb athleticism. The 6-foot-8 wing jarred punishing dunks to put up 7 points per game in a pair of contests. He also grabbed 3.5 rebounds and shot 58 percent from the floor. (KM)

TERENCE LEWIS, NATIONAL CHRISTIAN (MD) FORWARD
The 2016 MVP took full advantage of the opportunity in his DMVelite 80 debut, finishing as the leading scorer (14.7 points per game) and rebounder (10 per game) - becoming the first player to do so in the four-year history of the event. Lewis is a high-motor forward who consistently crashes the glass for second-chance points, and he’s developed nice shooting range out to the corners. (MH)

DENMARK SLAY, ST. STEPHEN’S & ST. AGNES (VA)
Though Slay stands at 5-foot-11, his height doesn’t get in the way of his playmaking ability. The combo guard scored in a variety of ways, averaging 7.3 points per game and knocked down one 3-pointer. His eight assists and four steals in three games both tied for third in the event. Slay has seen his recruitment take off this summer, and added offers from D-I High Point and D-2 Merrimack in the past week. (KM)

CYRIL OGBUAGU, RIVERDALE BAPTIST (MD) FORWARD

The 6-foot-6, 210-pound forward [PICTURED] turned in an efficient outing at the DMVelite 80, converting 75 percent of his shot attempts (12-for-16 shooting) en route to averaging 8.3 points per game. Ogbuagu hauled in a team runner-up nine rebounds (3.0 per game) and his 1.56 points per shot ratio ranked third for the event. (KM)

NANA OPOKU, POTOMAC (VA) FORWARD
The Mount St. Mary’s commit showed impressive range and versatility while averaging 6 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. He was effecient on the offense end, shooting 8-of-13 from the field and 2-of-3 from 3-point range. (MH)


BEN STANLEY, MILLWOOD (VA) FORWARD
Stanley (6-foot-6) stuffed the stat sheet and showed commanding leadership, fueling his team to two wins in three DMVelite 80 contests. The Virginia big man led his team in points per game (7.7) rebounds per game (5.7), total assists (5) and 3-pointers made (4-of-7). (KM)


KELEAF TATE, CESAR CHAVEZ (DC) GUARD
Tate, a D.C. inspiration, continued his strong summer with a captivating performance at the DMVelite 80. The majority of his scoring came from beyond the arc, as Tate hit five of his nine 3-pointers. He also put the ball on the deck and finish at the rim. The 6-foot-2 Chavez product was one of three players to average double-digit points per game (10.0 PPG), the other two were MVP Terence Lewis and ESPN 60 Kiyon Boyd. (KM)

JAMAL WASHINGTON, POTOMAC (VA) GUARD

A star on Potomac's state title team last season, Washington (PICTURED) showcased a sweet shooting stroke from outside, knocking down 10 3-pointers - including five in one game - while averaging a team-high 9.3 points per game. He plays with toughness, has good body control and finishes through contact. He also grabbed five rebounds in three contests. (MH)


GARRIC YOUNG, SIDWELL FRIENDS (DC) FORWARD

Young, a 6-foot-6 forward from D.C., pounded the glass, grabbing 16 total rebounds in three games, which was good enough for third in the event. His hustle and knack for being there at the right time earned him an event runner-up in offensive boards with 10.


JUSTIN FAISON, GWYNN PARK (MD) GUARD

The 5-foot-9 Faison wreaked havoc on the defensive end of the floor, harassing opposing guards while swiping five steals to tie for the event lead. His 55 percent field goal percentage and five assists were second on his team to Terence Lewis, the event MVP. (KM)
