The summer campaign came to a close with the third and final session of the 2016 DMVelite Media Series at Bowie City Gym and Holy Trinity Episcopal School.

Here’s a look at some of the top performers from the weekend:

TERRENCE LEWIS, COLLEGE BOUND ATHLETES 17U
The National Christian (Md.) 2017 forward capped his summer in impressive fashion, averaging an event-leading 23.2 points per game in five games for CBA, which rebounded from an opening loss to reach the 17U semifinals.

Lewis was consistently effective all weekend, posting three 24-point outings and a pair of 22-point performances to carry CBA. The 6-6, 180-pounder was extremely active in the paint, dominating the offensive glass and getting second-chance points.

Lewis transferred from Largo to National Christian last year and had a productive first varsity season, averaging 6.3 points per game. He’ll see his role expand greatly this upcoming season, and said overall that he was pleased with his summer campaign after running with Team Takeover Orange 17U.

“I got what I deserved,” he said. “I mean, everybody puts in the hard work and gets what they deserve. I got some D-1, D-2 and D-3 interest, but at the end of the day it really doesn’t matter what school I go to, I’m really just trying to play basketball with my teammates and make my family proud. But I did enjoy my summer; going to New York City, Atlantic City, playing in the Team Takeover Tournament in front of college coaches - it was a good summer.”

MIKE SPEIGHT, BUMP N RUN 17U

Speight and his Bump N Run teammates walked away with the 17U championship, but it didn’t come easy. Bump N Run fell into a 21-point deficit against Team Envy before rallying to win, 75-67. Speight finished with a team-high 20 points.

“We just dug deep and everybody just started playing better and we came back,” he said. “We were down, what, 21? Everybody said, ‘Man, it’s the championship game, we’re going to leave it on the floor,’ and we just came back.”

The Wise (Md.) 2017 guard flashed the skillset that’s made him a valued target, getting to the basket and finishing through contact while getting to the line, and making teams pay for leaving him open from 3-point range. Speight most recently picked up scholarship offers from Canisius, New Hampshire and Winthrop.

“I have 10-plus offer right nows, so I’m just going to take my time right now and try to make decision by November, December,” he said.

DARRON BARNES, BUMP N RUN 17U
Barnes was a force on both the offensive and defensive ends, and came up big when his team needed key plays. He had 17 points and the game-winning basket as time expired in a 63-61 semifinal win over CBA, and followed it up with a bucket And 1 to give Bump N Run its first lead after a 21-point rally in the title game against Team Envy. He finished the game with 15 points.

The weekend was a nice ending to s strong summer for Barnes, who ran with DC Blue Devils on the Under Armour Association Circuit.

“I’m my worst critic, so I’ll always say I could have done better,” he said. “I definitely could have done better over the summer but I think I did some good things; I picked up a few offers, I had a couple of great camps and I played solid on the circuit, so I think overall it was alright.”

Barnes said he’s looking to start cutting his list of college option in the next month or two, and is looking for a strong academic program that will give him an opportunity to play early.

“I have 14 [offers] right now, and I could possibly get more this month and maybe in September,” he said. “But I want to take my time with it and see if any other opportunities pop up with other guys committing and stuff.”

BRENT PEGRAM, BUMP N RUN 17U
Pegram opened with 20 points in a 73-57 win over Team Hustle Black and kept rolling offensively all weekend. He notched 16 against CBA, 14 against Team Renegade and 13 in the title win against Team Envy.

“Every game I come ready to play,” he said. “I come out in attack mode, and when my shot’s falling, I feel great.”

Pegram said he’s picked up recruiting interest from Army West Point and Shephard most notably, and said he’s looking to continue working on his strength and explosiveness heading into his senior season.

MATT KELLY, MARYLAND ELITE
The Quince Orchard sharpshooter’s range was on full display. He hit five 3-pointers in a 22-point outing against Team Envy, showing the touch that helped him recently earn a D-2 scholarship offer from Assumption (Pa.).

“They saw me two weeks ago play at Spooky Nook and I played really well up there,” Kelly said. “I had five pretty good games - and I think they’ve been seeing me throughout the spring and summer, so I think that was the last step that made them offer me.”

The offer was Kelly’s first at the D-2 level, and he’s hoping to build on it by expanding his all-around game.

“My strengths are ballhandling and shooting,” he said. “I’m definitely working on my strength and my defense. I’m just working on everything as an individual player to make my team better.”

DONTAE JOHNSON, TEAM ENVY 17U

The 2017 Annandale (Va.) guard seemed nearly impossible to keep out of the lane while averaging 21.3 points per game, including a 29-point outburst in a semifinal win against Maryland Elite.

MILES WEAVER, TEAM ENVY 17U
The 6-foot-5 T.C. Williams rising junior said he primarily plays in the post for the Titans, but he showed intriguing scoring ability from the wing, highlighted by a 27-point, four 3-pointer performance in a semifinal win against Maryland Elite.

Weaver added 15 points in a 64-55 win over Team Renegade. He said he wants to continue working on his strength and rebounding.

“This summer was a lot more exposure to where I’ve been playing,” he said, “so it’s all fun.”

TARIQ JOHNSON, METRO ALL-STARS 17U
Johnson carried Metro’s offense with his ability to get to the basket, and showed improving touch from the perimeter in a 19-point performance against Team Renegade. Johnson put up big numbers last year after transferring from Parkdale to Kent Island, and he seems primed for a big senior season.

TREY GROSS, TEAM RENEGADE 17U
A basketball and football standout at Annapolis, Gross used his length and motor to give opponents fits all weekend. He had a team-high 14 points against Metro All-Stars, and also notched double-figure scoring performances against Maryland Tigers and Bump N Run.

EJ WHITE, HIGHER LEVEL 16U
The Potomac (Va.) guard had several impressive offensive performances, including a 20-point outing to lead Higher Level to a runner-up finish in the 16U bracket. He was impressively efficient and consistent throughout the weekend.

VADO MORSE, BUMP N RUN 16U
The Bullis (Md.) 2018 guard lead Bump N Run to the 16U crown behind a steady offensive performance. He had 19 in a thrilling double overtime victory over Washington Warriors, and posted 12 in the 62-56 championship game victory against Higher Level (Va.).

JALEN WILLIS, TEAM SILK 15U
Willis was Team Silk’s most consistent performer during their 15U championship run, averaging 12 points per game. The Dunbar (Md.) 2019 guard has a nice frame and a quick first step that posed trouble for defenders as he attacked the basket with success.
“I’m getting better,” Willis said. “I could have done better than I did [this summer], it’s just I’m trying to become a point guard now. I’m working to slow down on my jump shot; Everybody calls me ‘One Speed’ and I’ve got to slow down.”

Willis opened with 18 points against Higher Level (Md.) and followed that with 12 against Bump N Run MoCo and 14 against Maryland Supreme. He tweaked a knee and had jsut four points in a 10-point semifinal win against Bump N Run, but rebounded to post a team-high 12 points in the championship win against Higher Level (Va.).

“It felt great,” he said. “We ended the season off with a good ‘W’ and got a trophy, so it felt good.”
