With the game tied and time winding down in the first half, Good Counsel had a golden opportunity to take a lead in to the locker room at the break.

But Gonzaga junior linebacker Mitchell Johns intercepted an errant Falcons pass in the end zone to stymie the drive and swing momentum in the Eagles’ favor.

Gonzaga used the boost, which was one of the four turnovers they collected during the game, to rout Good Counsel 32-13 on Fridaynight.
“I was just reading my keys and happened to be in the right place at the right time,” Johns said of the pivotal play. “The whole defense deserves credit for that play. We just had a great game out there.”

Johns finished the game with two interceptions, while junior cornerback Joseph Zuccari also grabbed a pair.

The Eagles used their extra possessions to feed the ball to junior running back Tyree Randolph, who had 28 carries for 207 yards and two scores.

Meanwhile, junior quarterback Sam Brown had a pair of touchdowns in the win including one to junior receiver Max Fisher.

On the other side, Good Counsel continually swapped between its quarterbacks. Senior Andres Castillo got the start but was benched in favor of junior Travis Nannen. Castillo and Nanne alternated at various points of the game, but neither could find much success against Gonzaga on Friday. The pair combined for just 11 completions and 138 passing yards.

The Falcons did have success running the ball with Mohamed Ibrahim, who had 16 carries for over 100 yards. But he left the game with injury, which left the Falcons leaning heavily on the passing game.

The Eagles can clinch a WCAC playoff spot with a win against Carroll next Saturday.
