GLENN DALE, MD - St. Vincent Pallotti (Md.) 2017 wing DJ Mitchell has been one of the area’s breakout players this offseason, putting together a strong summer campaign with DC Thunder.

Mitchell has continued his roll into the school year, earning Most Valuable Players honors and leading Pallotti over Capitol Christian last week to win the championship in the 3rd Annual DMVelite Fall League at Holy Trinity Episcopal Day School.

“I think [the league] helps us a lot to get ready for the season,” said Mitchell, who transferred in from DeMatha this summer. “We just put a new team together and lot of seniors left our team last year, so I think it’s really good for us. This championship sets us off to a good start, and I think we’ll have a good start this season.”

Mitchell was one of several players who looked good in Year 3 of the league, which featured Bladensburg, Blake, Capitol Christian, CH Flowers, Crossland, DuVal, Forestville, IDEA, Indian Creek, Laurel, Pallotti, Parkdale and Surrattsville. In addition, Cesar Chavez, La Plata and Northwestern-PG took part in Showcase games created to help them get some preseason work in.

“Each year it seems like the competition has increased,” League Director Brian Inge said. “There’s a lot of good teams and a lot of good players, and we’re getting more college coaches coming through, which is great.”

Three-time league participant Capitol Christian made yet another strong run before falling 52-43 to Pallotti, and coach Van Whitfield felt the work will again prove beneficial.

“It helps us out greatly,” he said. “I think every year we’ve been to the championship game in the DMVelite Fall League, and to see the progression of young men who get opportunities and get more reps and more confidence, we’re much more prepared for the regular season because of Fall League.”
