Eleanor Roosevelt Raiders are on a three game winning streak since losing its opening game to Riverdale Baptist. But most impressive is the 12 consecutive shutout quarters the defense has managed since a season opening lost, including a 13-0 victory against Charles H Flowers Jaguars Saturday night.

“After our first game, we made some adjustments and moved some guys around on defense, and now it’s starting to pay off,” said Roosevelt head coach Thomas Green. “We graduated over 25 seniors last year and we’re young so it’s just been about making adjustments and letting these guys get better as the games go on.”

The defense was able to make those necessary adjustments all night long. After forcing a three and out on its first defensive possession, the Raiders defense gave up a 56 yard pass from Brian Brown Jr. to Anthony Moore that set the Jaguars up in the red zone. Roosevelt buckled down, as they sacked and forced Brown Jr to fumble the ball on fourth down.

The Raiders were finally able to turn defense into offense. Following the turnover on downs, the Raiders ran the ball on six of their next seven plays; including a 45 yard quarterback keeper by Teyon Davis giving the Raiders an early 7-0 lead.

Roosevelt offense was able to turn turnovers into points a second time during the game, this time after a Juwan Rodriguez interception gave the Raiders the ball in Flowers territory. A Karl Mofor 14 yard touchdown run extended the Raiders lead 13-0 with less than five minutes to go in the half.

The second half was much of the same for both teams. The Raiders used a ground attack to run the clock, while the Jaguars tried to get its pass game going, but could never seem to muster up a big play when needed the most.

“We got beat up front in the trenches today,” said Flowers head coach Cato June, “They were just a lot more physical than us today, and you add the turnovers we had, and you’re just not going to beat good teams like Roosevelt when you turn the ball over.”

The Roosevelt defense in the second half was nothing less than dominating. The defense forced the Jaguars into two punts, three turnovers on downs and a shutout saving interception. While the offense was able to control the ball by rushing for more than 200 yards on the ground behind junior running back Mofor.

“Last year I was just following the lead of the seniors, trying to do as I was told,” said Mofor, “This year it’s on me, I’m one of the leaders on this team and it’s on me now to be a leader, and that’s what I’m trying to do.”

The Raiders will put their scoreless streak on the line Saturday when they take on the Bladensburg Mustangs at home.
