Rankings and placement on teams based on performance in the regular season and post season of the 2014-15 season. To be eligible, players must have played in the Maryland’s Bayside Conference and had to have been eligible to play for the entire season. Anyone removed from a team due to poor grades or for disciplinary reasons is ineligible.
All-Shore Player of the Year: Torrey Brittingham, PG, Wicomico, 2016
Brittingham averaged over 18 points, six assists and four steals per game this season and helped lead the Indians further than any Bayside team went this year – reaching the 2A semi-finals of the MPSSAA tournament. Brittingham was simply the best player on the best team and the one who improved his game the most from November to March. His court vision is perhaps his greatest asset, but can get to the rim and finish from a variety of angles as well, even in traffic. He will be the key piece to the Indians getting back to College Park next season and has begun to attract eyes from coaches and scouts from the next level.
All-Shore Coach of the Year: Butch Waller, Wicomico
This season marked the 24th time that Coach Waller took his team to College Park after beating Harford Tech for a regional title. That mark is good enough for second all-time in Maryland for trips to the semifinals by a coach – the first is Annapolis’ John Brady – and Waller plans to make it a 25th next season. This past season however, no one expected Wi-Hi to do what they did. Parkside was more talented, Washington scored better, Pocomoke was better defensively and James M. Bennett had one of the best scorers in the conference. One thing no one accounted for, though, was how well the veteran coach would make this team mesh. In his 49th season, Waller convinced his players to buy into a system and style and with the help of some great assistant coaches and his point guard, they went 22-4 and won the Bayside and Region title.
Defensive Player of the Year: Raymir Smith, G, Pocomoke, 2015
Pocomoke was an undersized team – as are much of the teams on the Bayside – but played a style of defense that made them very hard to beat. A key part of that was Raymir Smith, a guard standing at about 6’1” that played the four or five much of the season for the Warriors. Smith guarded positions 1-5 at a high level, often taking the assignment of the other team’s top player no matter where they played. In addition to his 14 points-per-game, Smith averaged two blocked shots, four steals and five rebounds per game as well, helping lead Pocomoke to the 1A East Region Final.
