SPRINGDALE, MD - Last weekend's 4th Annual DMVelite Tip-Off Classic featured 22 teams from D.C., Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina, and provided a little bit of everything for a crowd eager to get the 2014-15 season started.
College coaches from Maryland, Delaware, Radford, American, St Joseph's, Washington Adventist, St. Mary's, Stevenson, and Baltimore City Community College were among those in attendance. Host CH Flowers, Largo, St. Maria Goretti, National Christian, Bowie, Clinton Christian and Bishop McNamara all picked up victories on the first day, with Bowie providing the upset of the weekend by knocking off St. John's College.  St. Mary's Ryken, Takoma Academy, Prominence Academy, St. James and St. Frances were the victors on Sunday's second day of action.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6
CH FLOWERS 55, JOPPATOWNE 36 BOX SCORE

Event host CH Flowers jumped out to a quick 10-1 lead and never looked back to pick up a season-opening home win against Joppatowne.
Flowers’ Juwan Wayne and Tyrik Campbell each had 12 points points, with Wayne also pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds. Athletic 2016 forward Elliot Brown also opened some eyes, scoring 9 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Senior guard Jermaine Head, Jr. led Joppatowne with 12 points, while Montrell Horsey had 9. The Mariners dug themselves an early hole by misfiring at the free throw line (4-for-12 in the first half), and finished just 18-of-37 from the stripe for the game. They were also hurt by the absence of forward Fortune Okigweh (ankle), as Flowers outrebounded them 41-26.
LARGO 73, WASHINGTON-LEE 33 BOX SCORE

Largo’s defensive pressure was too much for Washington-Lee to handle, as the Lions blew the game open early and cruised.
Quinnipiac-bound Largo 2015 forward Abdulai Bundu (PICTURED, TOP) was dominant, finishing with an event-best 33 points on 13-of-15 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 shooting from the free throw line.
Washington-Lee 2015 guard Alex Seff scored 19 points in an impressive all-around performance, but no WL other player scored more than 5. The Generals turned the ball over 25 times and shot just 23 percent (10-of-41) from the field.
ST. MARIA GORETTI 60, SUITLAND 48 BOX SCORE

Goretti took advantage of Suitland’s short-handed backcourt to pull away and pick up the vicory. 2016 forward Ameka Akaya had 13 points to lead the Gaels, while 2017guard Elijah Clarence had 11 and 2016 guard Donte Doleman (PICTURED) added 9.
Suitland has been mentioned as one of the top prospects in the Prince Georges County 4A league due to the strength of its guard trio of Darryl Smith, Donnell Graham and Darrencio Daniels. Smith and Graham were sat out for disciplinary reasons, though, leaving Daniels to carry the load. He tried ably (21 points) but it wasn't enough to keep pace with Goretti's multi-faceted attack.
NATIONAL CHRISTIAN 61, PROMINENCE ACADEMY (NC) 56 BOX SCORE

National Christian rallied back in the final minute to edge Prominence, which had seized control behind the hot shooting of guard Jahlil Rawley (20 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field and 2-of-3 on 3-pointers.)
2016 wing Christian Matthews hit a floater with 31.1 seconds to go to give National a 59-57 lead, and the Eagles held on to cap a nice comeback. Prominence led 45-36 after three quarters, but NCA outscored them 25-11 in the fourth quarter.
National Christian 2015 forward Ismael Johnson had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while 2016 wing Mohammed Kabir finished with 13 points.
Mekhi Dula finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds for Prominence, while Jalen Gaddy added 12 points.
BOWIE 57, ST. JOHNS 55 BOX SCORE

In the weekend’s most intriguing result, Bowie took down Washington Catholic Athletic Conference stalwart St. John’s in a thriller that came down to the final second.
SJC had the ball with 11.4 seconds left, trailing by two (57-55). 2016 guard Anthony Cowan lost the ball under heavy pressure from Christian Bryant and off of Bowie, giving the Cadets one final chance with 1.0 second left. St. John's inbounded to 2016 guard Jeff Dowtin, who pulled up for a deep 3 that came up short as the buzzer sounded.
The Bulldogs turned in an impressive team performance, with several different players coming up with big buckets at key moments down the stretch. Bryant led Bowie with 17 points, while Corey Clemons and Quinton Drayton each had 8, Mike Gray 7 and Jalen Robinson 6.
Dowtin scored a game-high 21 points for the Cadets, while Cowan had 10.
CLINTON CHRISTIAN 69, WISE 62 BOX SCORE

Clinton Christian’s Ahsante Shivers scored 20 points against his old team to help the Eagles pull away in the second half. Kevin Dorsey added 15 points and D’Andre Johnson had 15 and 8 rebounds off the bench.
Wise led 16-12 after one quarter, but Clinton Christian outscored the Pumas 44-25 across the second and third quarters to gain control. Wise made a run late, but never could retake the lead.
2017 guard Michael Speight had 20 points for Wise, 2017 forward Darron Barnes 15 and 10 boards, and 2016 guard Maurice Gentry added 11 points.
BISHOP MCNAMARA 61, RIVERDALE BAPTIST 55 BOX SCORE

In Saturday's marquee matchup, McNamara jumped out to a 19-9 first-quarter lead and held off a furious late Riverdale rally to earn the win.
The Mustangs opened the fourth quarter with an 11-point lead, but the Crusaders rallied to tie the game at 54-54 with 1:36 to go. Jamir Moultrie responded with a runner with 1:00 to play, and McNamara sealed the win at the free throw line down the stretch.
Moultrie scored 23 points and Jamar Watson had 10 for the Crusaders. 2015 guard DeQuan Abrom scored a game-high 25 for Riverdale and also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 7
ST. MARY’S RYKEN 62, CESAR CHAVEZ 54 BOX SCORE

2015 wing Donte Etheridge went for 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead Ryken past a tough Chavez squad.
Chavez took its first lead on an Omaro Hagood bucket and free throw with 3:34 to play in the third quarter, but Ryken responded with a 10-0 run sparked by a 3-pointer from Penn State signee Deividas Zemgulis and never relinquished the lead again. Juwan Smith finished with 12 points for the Knights, and Zemgulis added all 10 of his in the second half.
2017 guard Greg Blaine had 18 points to pace the Eagles, while 2015 guard Tonny Blackwell had 10.
TAKOMA ACADEMY 59, THEODORE ROOSEVELT 53 BOX SCORE
Takoma outscored Roosevelt 20-14 in the fourth quarter to pick up the win and bounce back from a loss to Parkdale on Saturday.
Tigers standout 2015 forward Robert Montgomery dealt with foul trouble in the first half but was key in the second while finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Takoma’s Anthony Tate finished with 12 points and Cameron Stowe had 11.
2015 wing Anthony Whitney had a game-high 18 points to lead a young Roosevelt team which is depending on several new pieces.
PROMINENCE ACADEMY 56, CLINTON CHRISTIAN 52 BOX SCORE

A day after losing a lead and falling to National Christian, Prominence weathered another comeback - this time from Clinton Christian - but held on to win.
Prominence controlled the game for much of the first three quarters, but Clinton tied things up on an Ahsante Shivers putback with just over four minutes remaining. Free throw shooting down the stretch proved to be the difference, as the Royals held on for a four-point win.
Prominence’s Mekhi Dula had 16 points and 8 rebounds, while Charles Nermon had 13. Kevin Dorsey and 2017 wing Melo Eggleston each had 13 for Clinton Christian.
ST. JAMES 58, COOLIDGE 50 BOX SCORE

Virginia Tech signee Justin Robinson scored 16 points and 2018 forward Bryce Golden broke out with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds off the bench to help the Saints pull away late.
BJ Hill led Coolidge with 12 points, while Justin Route added 11 and nine boards.
ST. FRANCES 62, CAPITAL CHRISTIAN 58 (OT) BOX SCORE

2016 guard Daquan Bracey hit a driving lay-up - with contact - as time expired in regulation to force overtime, and 2017 wing Andre Rafus hit a big 3 in the extra period to lead St. Frances past Capital Christian in the final game of the weekend.
Bracey finished with 18 points and 4 steals to lead the Panthers, who also got 14 from Rafus and 13 points with 10 rebounds from 2015 forward Josh Ayeni. 2016 guard Kurk Lee, Jr. was also impressive, dishing out an event-best 11 assists.
The Warriors were led by 2017 guard Devante Carter (14 points), 2016 wing Chris Orlina (13 points and 10 rebounds) and 2018 center Nate Watson (12 points and 10 rebounds).
