South County and Varina capture state titles in basketball.

RICHMOND, VA - The VHSL State Tournament kicked off on Thursday, March 9, at the Siegel Center.

South County wins their first state title in school history while Varina shows that they're more than just a football school with a comeback victory over Wakefield.

5A - Varina 64 vs. Wakefield 60

The Varina Blue Devils came into their state title game against the Wakefield Warriors with a 26-2 record. Their program accomplishments have been five years in the making.

With two freshmen, a sophomore and a junior in the starting lineup, youth prevailed. The Blue Devils overcame a deficit early in the fourth quarter behind a big 3-pointer from 2021 guard Anthony "AJ" Williams. Williams finished the game with 17 points (6-10 FG, 2-5 3-PT), two steals and an assist.

The Blue Devils outscored the Warriors 41-29 in the second half. They held the Warriors best scorer to just nine points on six shots.

The player of the game was 2019 forward Tyrese Jenkins.  He finished with 21 points (6-8 FG, 2-3 3-PT), eight rebounds and two assists in the victory.

Jenkins is a 6-foot-6 forward with tons of potential. He has the ability to play both inside and outside and can handle the ball as well. He was Varina's primary ball handler in the game before it was all said and done.

Jenkins has garnered tons of interest from a lot of low-major colleges and currently holds offers from Hampton and Norfolk State.

6A - South County 63 - Western Branch 47

The South County Stallions took home their first state title in school history on Thursday night with a victory over the Western Branch Bruins, 63-47.

The Stallions were paced in scoring by 2018 guard Seth Dunn. Dunn finished with a game-high 19 points (8-11 FG), five rebounds, two assists and two steals off the bench.

It seemed that no matter where he was, 2018 center Quentin Millora-Brown found a way to get Dunn the ball. Millora-Brown nearly finished with a triple-double himself, earning the nod as player of the game. He finished the game with 13 points, 17 rebounds, eight assists and four blocks.

The game began with both teams feeling each other out like two prizefighters. After the first quarter, the score was 10-8 Stallions.

The Stallions began to assert themselves in the latter stages of the game, though. They held the Bruins to just five points in the third quarter. The Bruins were outrebounded 36-21 thanks to Millora-Brown's efforts.

The 6A state title stays in Northern Virginia for another year once again. Last season, W.T. Woodson won the title. In 2016, Westfield won it. Colonial Forge won the two in 2014 and 2015, back when the 6A classification was first established.
