Lake Taylor takes home its first state crown while John Marshall makes it 2 in a row

RICHMOND,  VA - The John Marshall Justices and Lake Taylor Titans took home 3A and 4A crowns respectively in the final day of VHSL State Championship action.

3A - John Marshall 63, Western Albemarle 42

The John Marshall Justices made it two VHSL crowns in a row by defeating the Western Albemarle Warriors, 63-42. Before tipoff, the Justices lined up near halfcourt and started up a "We Ready" chant and delivered from there.

They opened the first quarter outscoring the Warriors 19-7. At halftime, the score was 35-17. John Marshall held Western Albemarle to just four made field goals in the first half. And the Justices managed to do it with 2020 top-ranked forward Isaiah Todd in foul trouble throughout the first half.

Todd still finished with 10 points and six rebounds but the supporting cast stole the show. 2020 point guard Elijah Seward finished with 15 points on three 3-pointers. 2019 guard Jarious Ashlock had 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting off the bench.

To make things a little even more interesting, the Justices didn't have a senior starter in the lineup this year. Head coach Ty White  has something special brewing there.

The Warriors scoring attack was led by 2018 guard Chris McGahren who finished with 11 points.

4A - Lake Taylor 72, John Handley 66 (2OT)

The Lake Taylor Titans and John Handley Judges needed a few extra frames to decide who won the VHSL 4A crown.

The Titans and Judges put up a combined eight points in the first overtime frame, showing signs of wear and tear from regulation. In the second overtime, the Titans began to create some distance. By then, seniors Joe Bryant Jr. and Jalen Jordan had both fouled out of the game.

A few big baskets from 2018 forward Dereon Seabron were enough as the Titans eventually won it in the second overtime. Seabron gets the player of the game nod, finishing with 24 points, nine rebounds, three assists and a block.

Norfolk State signee Joe Bryant Jr. finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, three blocks, two assists and two steals. He certainly proved why he's headed to the next level by filling up the stat sheet.

Senior Mike Brown finished with a team-high 20 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the free throw line for the Judges. Senior Gus Wise hit some huge 3-pointers in regulation to keep John Handley in it, but it was too much Seabron in the end. Wise finished with 14 points.
