The Montgomery and Anne Arundel Elite squads opened the 2018 PYBL summer season with a victory. The opening game is never easy but as both contests exhibited, the outcome can be both close and over in a hurry.

The Montgomery and Frederick Elite squads squared off in the summer opener on Tuesday night. Frederick got off to a roaring start, outscoring Montgomery 15-7 in the first quarter.

It looked like Frederick would run away with this one in the early going but Montgomery came roaring back in the final three quarters. They cut the deficit to four and trailed 27-23 at halftime. Montgomery came out hot in the third quarter, going on a 21-9 scoring run to take their first lead all game.

Frederick would use a strong fourth quarter to keep things close but in the end, Montgomery prevailed 56-54. Frederick trailed 44-36 entering the fourth quarter before some big 3-pointers from Ricardo Glass brought them within one possession with just seconds remaining.

Despite their efforts, Montgomery managed to hold on, securing a comeback victory of their own. Corey Chesley led the way for the Montgomery Elite squad with 15 points along with 10 rebounds.  Farrell Crowell finished with 10 points, eight assists and six rebounds.

Frederick was led by Ricardo Glass' 17 points.

In the final game of the night, the Anne Arundel Elite squad made quick work of Loudoun County Elite, 77-44. Picking up where Shane Lancaster (St. Johns HS) left off, point guard Jaden Johnson paced Anne Arundel with 21 points, four assists, four rebounds and two steals.

6-foot-6 big man Amani Hansberry finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and two blocks, proving to be a dominant one-two combination alongside Johnson.

It was tough sledding on opening night for Loudoun County as their youth showed. They shot just 4-for-17 (23.5 percent) from 3-point land in the game and managed to score just eight points in the fourth quarter.
