Catching up with the Bethesda-Chevy Chase 2020 Guard

Few players in the area have seen their recruitments surge as much in the past year as Bethesda Chevy-Chase (Md.) 2020 guard Elijah Wood.

Wood - who ran with Team Thrill UAA 16U this spring - picked up his most recent offer from Florida on May 31, adding the Gators to a list that currently features Auburn, Colorado State, DePaul, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Hampton, Kansas State, Long Beach State, Norfolk State, Ole Miss, Rhode Island, Seton Hall, South Florida, St. Bonaventure, St. John’s, Texas A&M, Texas Christian, Texas Tech, Tulane and UNLV.

“It’s just a blessing – it’s all blessings,” Wood said after scoring 16 points and grabbing 8 rebounds in a loss to Wilson at the Capitol Hoops Summer League at DeMatha last Saturday. “I’m just trusting the process, and everything’s falling into place like it should be, hopefully.”

At 6-foot-6 and 165 pounds with a 7-foot wingspan, its easy to see what coaches like about Wood. After spending his freshman year at St. Andrews Episcopal (Md.), he transferred to B-CC, where he made an immediate impact while averaging 11.5 points per game.

“I feel the whole year was successful to be honest,” he said. “From the start of AAU that past summer all the way to the regular season for high school, I really liked the teams I was on and they really helped me develop and everything. I really love the coaching staff here; they’ve helped me develop my game.”

Wood will be counted on to carry a much larger portion of the scoring load at B-CC next season, and he's getting a chance to grow into that role this summer. He didn't have a good shooting day at DeMatha Saturday, going just 4-of-13 from the field against a tenacious Wilson backcourt that keyed on him. He made only one of his 11 3-point attempts, though the majority of those misses came with the Barons down big and him frantically trying to close the gap.

“[I'm working on my] Strength definitely, and my 3-point shot as well," he said. "I know for some reason I wasn’t making anything today and that was really annoying. And just being more physical. I’m just trying to get better; that’s all I’m worried about is just trying to get better.”
