St. Stephens & St. Agnes (Va.) 2019 wing Christian Depollar adapted well to an increased scoring role last season, averaging a team-high 11.8 points per game.

“Sophomore year I wasn’t anywhere as effective as I was last year,” he said. “Last year they needed me to be a scorer and I led the team in scoring, so I feel like that changed my mindset a lot as to what I’ve got to do this year and how much I can definitely up what I bought last year.”

Depollar looked more than ready on Saturday, scoring 20 points in a 72-43 win over Georgetown Prep at the Capitol Hoops Summer League at DeMatha. He went 7-of-11 from the field and 4-of-8 from 3-point range while grabbing 5 rebounds and getting two steals.

The 6-foot-5, 190-pound lefthander has already established himself  as a strong perimeter shooter, but said he’s working to expand his overall perimeter game.

“I’m trying to work on my handle, definitely,” he said. “I feel like I can shoot and I think I need to create my own shot more. A lot of my shots are catch and shoot, so if I’m able to create my own shot, that would be a really big aspect to my game.”

After opening the spring with DC Premier, Depollar has settled in with Team Thrill UAA 17U, helping them go 4-1 in their last outing.

"I feel like it’s a really good fit for me, and I’m going to finish out the summer with them," he said. "I played with most of the guys in 8th grade when we played on Team Melo together, so they’re definitely good guys and I know a bunch of them.”

On the recruiting front, Depollar listed interest from several Division I programs.

“Recently it’s been a bunch of Ivy’s – Penn, Princeton," he said. "I’m talking to Holy Cross heavy, Air Force really heavy and VCU really heavy. I’m going to go to those elite camps and hopefully it’s a good turnout.”

So, what’s the key for Depollar going forward?

“It’s confidence,” he said. “I’ve got to keep my confidence up and I’ve got to know that I can’t just be a scorer; I’ve got to get stops on the defensive side and I’ve got to rebound. So I feel like if I do everything that my team needs, then we could be really successful.”
