Jason Lewis is looking to carry a heavier scoring load next season, and if his summer league debut is any indication, it’s a role he looks more than capable of handling.

The soon-to-be Walt Whitman (Md.) 2019 guard - he’s transferring from St. Andrews Episcopal (Md.) - poured in a game-high 26 points in the Vikings’ 60-46 win over Mount Carmel at the Capitol Hoops Summer League on Saturday at DeMatha.

“I was sixth man on the team, and I was expected to just come in and knock down shots for St. Andrews,” Lewis said. “But I wanted a bigger role for my senior year so i decided to transfer here so I can challenge myself and lead the team.”

Lewis got his 26 on a very efficient 10-for-15 shooting day, including a perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point range. He’ll be counted on to help the Vikings replace the production they are losing with the graduations of leading scorers Alex Sanson and Joey Squeri.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pounder listed his shooting as one of his biggest strengths, and is excited to show what he can do with expanded opportunities.

“Yeah, I’ve always been somewhat of a scorer,” he said. “I always feed off my teammates - off transition, especially - just running the floor after playing solid defense.”

Lewis is running with Mid-Atlantic Select this spring and summer, and pointed to his off-ball defense as the biggest area of his game he wants to improve, as well as getting stronger and faster.

“It’s been good so far,” he said of joining Whitman. “Getting to know the team has been fun, and practicing with them and learning all the plays has been good so far.”
