A look at the Bishop Ireton 2019 guard.

2019 guard Ethan Lynch is the leader of a young Bishop Ireton (Va.) squad that is aiming to make an impact in the perennially-competitive Washington Catholic Athletic Conference.

In the recent 2018 Charm City Challenge at DeMatha, Lynch showed the kind of playmaking ability the Cardinals will be counting on, scoring the game-winning bucket in the final seconds of a 61-59 win over  Loyola Blakefield (Md.).

After the game, the 6-foot-2, 190-pound Lynch took some time to discuss his expectations for the season, his game, and his newest off-court interest:

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THE TEAM?

“We’re young but I think we can be really good defensively. Obviously we’re working and we’ve got a young team, but I think in the league we play in guys are going to mature and get better night in and night out playing the teams we play, and I think by playoff time we can be a pretty good team.”

WHAT ARE YOUR INDIVIDUAL GOALS FOR THE SEASON?

“For me, recruitment is pretty open. But as far as this team right here, I’m looking to be a leader and be the guy that guys come to asking for help or when they have questions or anything like that. Just really being that guy that they look to and making big plays out on the floor.”

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER THE STRENGTHS OF YOUR GAME?

“I think right now just getting to the basket, being strong and physical. I like to play defense - I like to guard the opposing team’s best player. For four years now that’s been my role, so I’ve gotten pretty good at noticing those things defensively.”

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO OFF THE COURT?

“I play video games on my phone, but I like to cook, which is a new hobby I just picked up. But regular teenage stuff, really. I like to eat, so that’s one thing, but just learning the ins and outs of the kitchen is a cool thing for me just because growing up my Mom makes the best food ever, so I like to just stick behind her. She’s taught me a lot about it, so I just kind of picked it up.”

ANY PARTICULAR DISHES?

“I like Italian food – spaghetti, chicken parm, all that stuff.”

DID YOU PLAY ANY OTHER SPORTS GROWING UP?

“I played flag football and soccer, but I kind of gave those up. When I started playing basketball I figured that’s what I was going to do.”

WHAT CAN YOU BRING TO A COLLEGE PROGRAM?

“I feel like I can bring toughness. Defensively, I feel like I can be a good defensive player and do whatever the coach needs me to do. On both ends of the floor, I feel like I can do well.”
