The St. John's 2020 guard is on the rise.

St. John’s (DC) 2020 guard Darius Maddox has been one of the area’s fastest-rising recruits, adding a host of D-I offers after a strong spring and summer with Team Durant.

The 6-foot-4, 170-pound Maddox currently lists offers from Cincinnati, Creighton, George Washington, Kansas State, La Salle, Massachusetts, Oklahoma State, Rhode Island, Seton Hall, Temple, Virginia Commonwealth and Virginia Tech.

After scoring 11 points in a win over St. Vincent Pallotti at the recent 2018 Charm City Challenge, Maddox took time to discuss his recruitment and goals for the season:

YOUR RECRUITMENT HAS TAKEN OFF IN THE PAST YEAR. WHAT WOULD YOU ATTRIBUTE THAT TO?

“Definitely just staying in the gym and staying humble. And definitely kind of zoning out most of the people that say negative things and using that as fuel to the fire.”

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR IN A SCHOOL?

“Definitely a school that I feel comfortable with, and a school that definitely runs and gets up and down the floor.”

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER THE STRENGTHS OF YOUR GAME?

”I definitely feel like I can shoot the ball very well. And defensively, I feel like I’m long and athletic, so I can make hustle plays and I get to the rim and attack and finish.”

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THE TEAM?

“I definitely feel like this group, we should do a lot of good things. We have a lot of energy and chemistry and everybody likes each other. In terms of with the coaches, we all have a good relationship so this should be really fun.”

ARE THERE ANY PARTICULAR GAMES YOU HAVE CIRCLED?

“We just want to get after it with everybody. We can play with the best of the best and we can play with teams locally, so it’s cool.”

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO OFF THE COURT?

“Mostly just hanging out with friends and family. I literally just stay low and stay in the house. I’ll go out to the mall or movies, but I’m not like, a party guy.”

DID YOU PLAY ANY OTHER SPORTS GROWING UP?

“It’s all basketball. I ran track when I moved to Maryland [from Rochester, NY], but other than that, it’s mainly hoops.”

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR FAVORITE ON-COURT MEMORY?

“I would say maybe in the fourth grade – it was like the second year I moved down here, I hit a buzzer beater and the crowd was just screaming my name and it was cool.”
