The 2020 guard has a new role following his transfer.

2020 guard Delonnie Hunt was one of the biggest late transfers of the offseason, moving from St. John’s (DC) to Rock Creek Christian (Md.) in October.

While Hunt played well for a guard-laden SJC squad as a sophomore, the move to Rock Creek has thrust him into a greatly-expanded role, and it’s one he’s embraced. On Saturday, the 5-foot-10, 160-pounder scorer 18 points to help the Eagles improve to 3-0 with a 93-56 win over Cesar Chavez in the ARS Rescue Rooter National Hoopfest at DeMatha.

After the game, Hunt took time time to discuss this move, goals for the season and more:

HOW HAS THE TRANSITION BEEN?

“So far it’s been just a matter of getting settled in and getting adapted with a whole new team. The transition’s been difficult because it’s not really somewhere I expected to be, but I’m getting more used to it. Basketball is going well and I’m keeping my grades up, so i’m just going to continue to grow.”

HOW MUCH DO YOU THINK YOUR WCAC EXPERIENCE HELPS?

“I think it helps a lot, because sometimes people get down on themselves when they make the right play but it didn’t [work out]. Like, sometimes in basketball it’s not always going to go your way, so you’ve just got to keep playing through. ... I feel like I can help this team out and spread it around. And that way we win more and we compete better and make the smarter plays and stuff like that.”

DID IT HELP HAVING [FORMER SJC TEAMMATE GUY FAUNTLEROY] COME OVER AS WELL?

“It does, for sure. Growing up, we weren’t always, like, the best teammates or whatever, and then at St. John’s with me playing varsity and him playing JV and practicing with the varsity we weren’t really competing that much. But as we got to Rock Creek our bond got closer, and we realized we’re the strongest back court, so why not show it?” [NOTE: Fauntleroy had a game-high 21 points against Chavez.]

TAKE ME BACK TO YOUR DUNKS TODAY; WHAT HAPPENED?

“The first one was a little slight; I didn’t expect to get it until the last minute but I was able to explode to the rim. And then the second one, I told him to go to the backboard but he just threw it up, so it was easier for me to just punch it in.”

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER THE STRENGTHS OF YOUR GAME?

“Early in the game I feel like I can see what teammates are on and are off, and I can feed them and then let my game come to me as a scorer. But the other main things that I like to focus on first are getting others involved and defending and rebounding, so we’ve got a chance to get the ball. So as I’m getting other players opened up, I’ll open up as well.”

HOW IS YOUR RECRUITMENT GOING?

“I’ve been hearing from a couple of schools, but I’m not really worried about the schools right now. I just want to play, and hopefully the offers will roll in right after.”

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR IN A SCHOOL?

“Just a great place on the court and off the court. I think I want to stay on the East Coast, I’ll be honest with you. I have no problem going to the West Coast, but if I had an option it’d be the East.”

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO OFF THE COURT?

“I’m either working out or chillin’; preparing my body or resting my body. And then having out with friends and joking, because those memories are forever.”

YOU MENTION REST; HOW IMPORTANT IS THAT WITH YOUR SCHEDULE?

“I think it’s important, because rest doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t have to be in the gym. You can be resting while you’re shooting free throws or something like that. You can always stay in the gym and there’s other ways to prepare your body: icing or something like that. So it’s important, because without your knees or anything you really can’t play.”

DID YOU PLAY ANY OTHER SPORTS GROWING UP?

“Basketball’s always been my thing, but when I was in middle school I would always try to try new sports to get adapted that way. Like, I ran track when I was in middle school to keep my legs better, football to stay stronger, baseball - a lot of things.”
