2021 guard Guy Fauntleroy's transfer from St. John's (DC) to Rock Creek Christian (Md.) over the summer significantly shortened his daily commute while increasing his workload on the court.

So far the 6-foot, 175-pounder is thriving in his new surroundings. In a 93-56 win over Cesar Chavez in the ARS Rescue Rooter National Hoopfest at DeMatha, Fauntleroy led the Eagles in scoring (21 points) and rebounds (9). He shot 7-of-10 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line.

After the game, Fauntleroy discussed his move, his game, and more:

HOW HAS THE TRANSITION BEEN?

“It’s good. St. John’s was like an hour from my house and Rock Creek is like 10 minutes, so it’s easier.”

WHAT’S BEEN THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE BASKETBALL-WISE?

“My coaches expect more from me. At St. John’s I kind of took a backseat, and here we’re sharing and I’m on the court way more than I was at St. John’s.”

WHAT IS THE POTENTIAL OF THIS GROUP?

“We’re young, so a lot of us are coming back next year and the year after that. Most of us are sophomores, so if we just keep playing together and as long as we grow as a team, we’re going to be real good.”

WHAT ARE THE STRENGTHS OF YOUR GAME?

“Probably going to the basket and my defense. My jump shot has improved a lot. Every game is not meant for a jump shot, and when [the defenders] are smaller I can go to the basket and when they’re big, my jump shot’s improved a lot.”

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO OFF THE COURT?

“I just hang with my friends. I don’t play video games like that. I’ll just go watch other basketball teams play - like, tonight I might stay and watch some other games.”

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE NBA TEAM?

“OKC - I like [Russell] Westbrook. His motor, he just runs all day, and I like to pattern my game after that.”

HAVE ANY COLLEGES REACHED OUT TO YOU YET?

“I mean, some schools have sent my mail, like Oklahoma State, Mizzou.  So I’ve heard from some.”

DID YOU PLAY ANY OTHER SPORTS GROWING UP?

“I played it all. I played baseball, football and soccer, but after a while once I started growing and thinking I could be good [in basketball], I just left everything else alone and I just played year-round basketball.”

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR FAVORITE BASKETBALL MEMORY?

“My first in-game dunk, two weeks ago at Pallotti. It was adrenaline, for real - he threw it back to me coming down the middle and dunked it. I didn’t think I was going to dunk it, but I just tried and got it.”
