Recaps from the fourth and final day of the 2018 Governor’s Challenge:

WICOMICO YOUTH & CIVIC CENTER

ST. JOSEPH BY THE SEA (NY) 65, POCOMOKE (MD) 44
2020 guard Gerard Nicholson scored 16 points and dished out 6 assists to lead the Vikings to a win in the Bracket 16 Consolation game.

2019 guard John Orosz and 2019 center 2019 center Andrew Testaverde each had 11 points for St. Joe’s, while 2020 guard Matthew Koutros finished with 10 and 2020 forward Joseph Rogers added 9 on 4-of-4 shooting.

2021 guard Charles Finney III had 16 points to lead the Warriors, while 2020 forward Brandon Snowden had 11.

THEODORE ROOSEVELT (DC) 65, EASTON (MD) 49
2019 guard Micko Reeves dropped 30 points (11 of 17 shooting) and dished five assists to lead the Roughriders to a Bracket 15 consolation win.

Theodore Roosevelt 2019 guard Jibril Muhammad scored 18 points on 8 of 12 shooting.

2019 guard Lamont Powell Jr. paced Easton with 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists.

BRACKET 13 CHAMPIONSHIP DOVER (DE) 68, FOREST PARK (VA) 42
2019 guard John Lassiter scored 15 points to help propel the Senators to the Bracket 13 title.

Dover 2020 guard Elijah Allen scored 13 points a day after going for 26.

2019 guard Brandon Daniels paced Forest Park with nine points.

BRACKET 16 CHAMPIONSHIP: OSBOURN PARK (VA) 71, HEREFORD (MD) 37
2020 guard Ethan Wilson poured in 43 points - just one short of tying the Governor’s Challenge record set last year - as the Yellow Jackets took home a bracket title.

Wilson scored 25 points in the first half to help OBHS build a 38-16 lead at the break, and made a spirited chase for the record in the final minutes before coming up one shy. Harford Christian (Md.) 2018 guard Derreck Orr set the record with 44 last December.

2019 guard Kylique Walker added 10 points for Osbourn Park.

2019 guard Mason Greenspan led the Bulls with 21 points.

BRACKET 15 CHAMPIONSHIP: PATRIOT (VA) 58, GOOD COUNSEL (MD) 50

Seniors Hagen Vandiver (17 points), Devon Parrish (16) and Jakai Moore (14) helped the Pioneers stave off a Good Counsel rally to earn the Bracket 15 Championship.

2020 guard Bryce Walker led the Falcons with 16, 2021 guard Bez Mbeng had 12 and 2020 guard Justin Graham 11.

POTOMAC (VA) 56, MILFORD MILL (MD) 38
2021 forward Tyrell Harris posted 14 points and 13 rebounds as the Panthers triumphed in the Bracket 17 consolation.

Potomac 2020 guard Emanuel White added 13 points and 2019 guard Deonta Dunlap paced Milford Mill with 12 points.

ST. ANDREW’S (RI) 73, FATHER HENRY CARR (TORONTO) 57
2019 guard Brycen Goodine went for 20 points, eight rebounds, and three assists as the Saints pulled away in the second half for the Showcase victory.

After leading 34-33 at the break, St. Andrew’s outscored Henry Carr 39-24 in the second half. 2019 center Keegan Records added a double-double for the Saints with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

2020 guard Josh Morgan and 2019 guard Kobey Lam each scored 18 points for Henry Carr.

BRACKET 17 CHAMPIONSHIP: ST. MARY’S RYKEN (MD) 85, GAITHERSBURG (MD) 65
Behind a big second half (51 points) and 2019 guard Louis Tang (33 points, eight rebounds), the Knights rolled to the Bracket 17 title.

St. Mary’s Ryken also received double-digit scoring efforts from 2021 guard Aaron Jasper (12 points), 2020 guard Jules Bikoy (10 points) and 2021 forward Kenny McKoy (10 points).

2021 guard Jao Ituka led Gaithersburg with 28 points on 8 of 15 shooting and 11 of 13 from the free throw line.

OLYMPIC (NC) 84, WICOMICO (MD) 55
2020 guard Josh Banks registered a double-double (21 points, 10 rebounds) and the Trojans shot 65 percent from the field (37 of 57) with 64 points in the paint to dismantle the hometown Indians.

Olympic 2019 guard Deonte Randolph added 20 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.

2020 guard Jaden Baker paced Wicomico with 15 points, six rebounds, and three assists.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN (NY) 73, ABRAHAM LINCOLN (PA) 56
2019 guard Brian Stevens scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Abraham Lincoln Railsplitters from New York past the Abraham Lincoln Railsplitters from Pennsylvania.

Abraham Lincoln (NY) 2020 guard Deontay Sprattley added 13 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.

2020 guard Shaquil Bender paced Abraham Lincoln (PA) with 11 points and eight rebounds.

MARET (DC) 58, BOYS LATIN (MD) 42
Yale-bound 2019 forward EJ Jarvis scored 30 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the Frogs to a victory punctuated by a strong closing run.

The score was tied at 40-40 after three quarters, but Maret outscored Boys Latin 18-2 in the final frame to earn a comfortable victory.

Loyola (Md.)-bound 2019 guard Cameron Spencer led the Lakers with 14 point, 7 rebounds and 5 assists.

ELIZABETH (NJ) 48, GILMAN (MD) 43
2021 forward Abdul Shanunu tallied 16 points and 16 rebounds to power the Minutemen to a Showcase victory.

Elizabeth 2020 guard DeWarren Watkins scored 15 points and hauled in seven rebounds.

2019 guard Jalen Rucker managed 10 points, six rebounds, and four assists to lead Gilman.

LINCOLN ACADEMY (GA) 75, BROOKLYN COLLEGIATE (NY) 54
2019 wing Elias King had 24 points and 10 rebounds as the Bulldogs pulled away to take the nightcap.

2021 center Franklin Anselme had 12 points and 2021 guard Cemaron McDowell had 10 points.

Brooklyn Collegiate was led by 2020 guard Amahrie Simpkins. 2019 guard Glen Anderson and 2020 forward Jaylin Anderson had 12 apiece, while 2020 guard Majesty Johnson finished with 10.

[GIRLS] RIVERDALE BAPTIST (MD) 67, ST. ANDREWS (RI) 37
2019 forward Rayne Tucker registered 14 points, seven rebounds, and five steals as the Lady Crusader’s pulled away from the Saints with a 30-point fourth quarter.

2020 guard Kaylah Ivey added 12 points and four rebounds for Riverdale Baptist.

Megan Bodziony paced St. Andrew’s with 10 points.

MARYLAND-EASTERN SHORE

[GIRLS] JM BENNETT (MD) 71, NEW DORP (NY) 30

The day after winning the M&T Bank 3-Point Contest, 2021 guard Mekara Hanson poured in 30 points on 12 of 18 shooting as the hometown Clippers cruised to a Bracket 5 consolation win.

JM Bennett 2020 guard Zyaire Smullen had 18 points.

2022 forward Sydney Gomes paced New Dorp with 11 points and six rebounds.

[GIRLS] SALISBURY CHRISTIAN (MD) 45, POCOMOKE (MD) 26
B. Morrison had 14 points as SCS used a 16-4 second-quarter run to pull away.

2020 guard Ajah Kellam scored 16 points to lead Pocomoke.

[GIRLS] WALT WHITMAN (MD) 65, ABRAHAM LINCOLN (PA) 32
2021 guard Jaclyn Morgan and 2020 forward Drew Meadows each had 8 points to lead a balanced scoring effort for the Vikings. Overall 11 players scored for Whitman.

2019 guard Ariella Pena scored 11 points to lead the Railsplitters.

GIRLS BRACKET 4 CHAMPIONSHIP: BOONSBORO (MD) 39, INDIAN RIVER (MD) 12
2019 guard Kaitlyn Rogers (19 points) outscored Indian River by herself to lead the Warriors to a bracket title victory.

2021 Micayla Meehan had 6 points to lead Indian River.

GIRLS BRACKET 5 CHAMPIONSHIP: SUSSEX TECH (DE) 44, URBANA (MD) 36
Sierra Troyer scored 17 points to lead the Ravens to the Bracket 5 crown.

2019 guard Kendall Haggerty scored a game-high 19 points for the Hawks.
 

VERITAS PREP (CA) 77, VIRGINIA ACADEMY (VA) 67
Mississippi State commit Iverson Molinar scored 33 points as Veritas closed its four-game Governor’s Challenge trip on a three-game winning streak.

Molinar, a 2019 guard, went 12-of-19 from the field. Stefan Gabriel scored 23 points for Veritas.

2019 guard Jayln Cole-Williams scored 18 points to lead the Patriots, while 2020 guard Amir Nesbitt had 17 and 2021 center Oluwasegun Durosinmi finished with 13.

WICOMICO HIGH

BRACKET 14 CHAMPIONSHIP:  MCKINLEY TECH (DC) 74, POLYTECH (DE) 56
2019 guard Tervondre Williams scored 23 points and 2019 guard Daniel Allen 14 to lead the Trainers to a bracket title.

Demetrius Fontel led the Panthers with 16 points.

BRACKET 11 CHAMPIONSHIP: WINSTON CHURCHILL (MD) 65, HAMMOND (MD) 64

2019 forward Dorta Orta’s layup at the buzzer and 2020 wing Jomo Goings (18 points, nine rebounds) prevailed the Bulldogs as Bracket 11 champions in thrilling fashion.

The lead changed hands three times in the final 30 seconds, with 2020 forward Ethan Rinder finishing a layup off the break to put Churchill ahead, 63-61. On the ensuing possession, 2019 guard Jaylen Wiggins (21 points) banged home his fifth triple of the contest to thrust the Golden Bears ahead, 64-63, with nine seconds left. That’s when Orta finished the game-winning layup at the rim off two quick passes to prevail the Bulldogs.

Churchill 2019 guard John Mbenga finished with 17 points a day after going for 25.

BRACKET 12 CHAMPIONSHIP: BISHOP SULLIVAN CATHOLIC (VA) 79, HIGHLAND SCHOOL (VA) 71

2019 guard Brandon Kline scored 23 points to propel the Crusaders to the Bracket 12 title.

Bishop Sullivan 2019 forward Kenan Satvan recorded a double-double (20 points and 10 rebounds) and 2019 guard Shawn Walker Jr. added 15 points and five rebounds.

2021 guard Angelo Brizzi had 22 points and five rebounds to lead Highland.

BRACKET 10 CHAMPIONSHIP: SUSSEX TECH (DE) 61, WALT WHITMAN (MD) 59

2020 guard Devon Reynolds scored 26 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer with 19 seconds left, to lift the Ravens to the Bracket 10 title.

2020 guard Skyler Johnson added 16 points, six rebounds, and four assists for Sussex Tech.

2019 guard Jason Lewis led Whitman with 18 points and five rebounds.

JM BENNETT HIGH

CESAR CHAVEZ (DC) 96, CAMBRIDGE-SOUTH DORCHESTER (MD) 84
2021 guard Lamont Tate scored 23 points to lead five Chavez players in double figures as the Eagles put up the event’s highest point total this year.

For Chavez, 2021 forward Maurice Johnson had 17 points, 2019 forward Deante Wallace 15 points, 2021 guard Missiah Brown 14 and Deandre Martin 11.

2020 guard Logan Middleton scored 16 points to lead the Vikings, who also got 15 from 2020 guard Dajawan Jackson, and 12 apiece from 2019 guards Keyshawn Potter and Davion Ralph.

CALVERT (MD) 65, COLONEL RICHARDSON (MD) 43
2019 guard Ryan Rachic scored 24 points and 2021 guard Mark Rachic added 10 to lead the Cavaliers to a Bracket 14 consolation victory.

2019 guard Lorenzo Turner led the Colonels with 20 points, while 2020 guard Diante Dickerson added 16.

KENT COUNTY (MD) 70, CARVER E&S (PA) 69
2020 guard JayShaun Freeman scored 37 points as the Trojans edged the Engineers in the Bracket 11 consolation game.

Taekwon Duggins had 11 points and 8 rebounds for Kent County, while 2019 guard Corey Robinson finished with 10 points.

The Trojans needed those points to counter a monster effort by Carver E&S 2019 forward Steven Dao, who had 36 points and 14 points. 2020 guard Aziz Jamal-McDaniels had 19 points and 14 boards for the Engineers.

SEVERN SCHOOL (MD) 55, EAGLE ACADEMY (NY) 52
2019 guard AJ Burch had 21 points and 2019 guard Mo Terry 17 as the Admirals closed their visit with a Bracket 12 consolation win.

2020 guard DaMarco Watson had 12 for the Eagles, while 2020 guard Michael Caldero finished with 11.

NEW TOWN (MD) 77, NORTH CAROLINE (MD) 21
Maurice Reese had 11 points while 2019 forward Darrell Collins had 10 and 2021 center Julian Reese had 10 points and 8 rebounds as the Titans rebounded from an opening loss for a Bracket 10 consolation win.

2020 forward Kendron Wayman had 8 points to lead the Bulldogs.
